Are you just learning to SUP?

Here are some tips:

How To Keep Your Balance While stand up paddle boarding SUP and SUP surfing:

KEEP YOUR KNEES BENT! For stand up paddle boarding and any other type of balance sports like surfing, skateboarding, skating, inline skating, or skiing, keeping ones knees bent helps you keep your balance.

Keeping your knees bent helps you keep your balance by allowing you to adjust your center of gravity and can help prevent you from falling.

IMPORTANT - Always keep your knees bent slightly when stand up paddle boarding and especially when SUP surfing. Keeping your knees bent helps you keep your balance by allowing you to adjust your center of gravity and can help prevent you from falling.

How To Paddle Straight on a SUP / How To Paddle Straight on a stand up paddle board:

This is one of the trickier things to do on a SUP (especially when paddling into the wind)

You can paddle on one side for a while and then switch sides.

You can do the J stroke - start by paddling straight on one side and then at the end of the stroke make an outward J that helps keep you going straight.

How to stand on the SUP / How to stand on the stand up paddle board:

When paddling on flat water, you normally stand facing forward.

When SUP surfing on a wave, you normally stand in the surfing position sideways on the board.

When paddling to catch the wave, I like to stand in a position halfway between the flat water paddle and the surfing position. Then, once I catch the wave I move to the surfing position.

SAFETY TIP: When surfing on a stand up paddle board, hold the paddle away from the wave unless you are using the paddle - holding the paddle away from the wave can help prevent the wave from pushing the paddle shaft into you and may help avoid serious injury.
