January 2024

Throwing away your food scraps with your everyday trash could bring a fine in 2024. What you need to know about California's compost law:

Throwing away your kitchen food scraps in the trash can could be breaking a California law in some cases.

Starting in 2024, SB1383 (passed back in 2021) allows cities to fine citizens for not recycling their food waste.

Sunnyvale has not announced any plans to issue such fines, but the time to get used to recycling your food/organic waste is now before they do.

There is another farmers market opportunity every Tuesday when you visit the Library Plaza from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Freshest Cargo Mobile Farmers Market offers 100% California grown produce, sourced entirely from small farms within 200 miles of the Bay Area.

Shredded Paper and Documents

From the City's "How To Get Rid Of Anything" page:

Shredded paper has a very low value on the recycling market and easily becomes litter. If you shred documents at home, they can go in the paper recycling cart IF they are put in a paper bag that has been stapled closed. If they are in a plastic bag, please put in the garbage.

Back during the early days of the pandemic, the Specialty Solid Waste & Recycling department suspended the requirement that a prepaid Extra Garbage Tag be attached to any of the extra garbage bag(s) you placed out next to your trash can on collection day. That suspension has been rescinded, and you will once again need to attach one of these tags to each of your extra trash bag(s) going forward. These tags are sold at supermarkets, City Hall Annex, Community Center and the SMaRT Station. Go to Sunnyvale.ca.gov and search "Extra Garbage" to find locations to purchase them or call 408-565-9900.
