3.3 Map Workflows

Description: This module provides information on how to design, test, and implement improved CDS approaches.

Action Steps:

• Identify and map Key Clinical Processes
  • How to Map Workflows
    • Name and Define Key Clinical Process
    • Determine Boundaries Including Start and Finish Points and Level of Detail
    • Brainstorm with Those Involved in the Process: Document Each Task/Activity on a Sticky Note or Index Card. Initially, the Sequence of Events Is Not as Important as Determining Key Tasks.
    • Arrange the Tasks in Chronological Order. You May Find Additional Steps and Players in the Process.
    • Once All Tasks are Included and Consensus is Obtained, Draw Arrows to Determine the Flow of Information and Tasks.
    • Review and Validate the Process with Everyone Involved in the Process. Make corrections as Needed.
    • Use Any Tools You Have to Diagram the Process (Commercial Software Programs Are Best as They Include the Appropriate Symbols and Diagrams).
    • Identify Opportunities for Improvements.
