99. On-Line VA Property Resources

The following was provided by John Sinks.

Some, but not all may already be familiar with these sources, so I will give quick instructions.

Virginia Land Patents and Grants are available on-line from the Library of Virginia and indexed. From their on-line catalogue, click on Images and Indexes and then Virginia Land Office Patents and Grants. Then enter your search. The two Henrico patents are not indexed properly, so I am attaching them. One is on Bear Garden Cr. and the other on Watson's Branch of the James. (I have the latter pegged as land of the John who died in Goochland.) I started matching the grants and purchases to the sales, but have barely started.

Virginia Personal Property and Land Taxes went into effect in 1782. Binnsgenealogy.com has about 2/3 of the personal property taxes from 1782 for about 20 years, give or take, commercially available on-line. The annual subscription fee is presently $24 (down from $40) For the last several years they have not been charging for renewal. Here is the availability of personal property lists for some key counties:

Albemarle--1782-1813

Amherst--1782-1803

Bedford--1782-1805

Buckingham--1782-1810

Campbell--1785-1814

Caroline--1783-1809

Franklin--1786-1803

Goochland--1782-1809

Halifax--1782-1801

Lunenburg--1782-1835

I have on my pc 1782 and 1783 lists that Binns does not have available. DAR accepts the 1783 list as evidence of Patriotic Service; SAR accepts both 1782 and 1783 as evidence of Patriotic Service. (If anyone is interested in joining SAR, let me know.)

The Library of Virginia has also posted on-line petitions to the legislature. Go to virginiamemory.com/collections/petition .
