Kits B6124 NOW WITH SNP A6108 and 362816

Lineages displayed here were provided by individual ydna kit members, or their representatives, who are solely responsible for providing any ethical or copyright credits..

3/2016 & 2019 revisions: B6124 tested positive for a key SNP indicator, A6108, of a line from Albemarle Co, NC. That line, composed now of kits with A6108 is being researched and may not be descended from Thomas d.1751 Albemarle.

This information in this lineage includes a civil war Tennessee survey record record that points to Ireland as the patriarch's origin. If true it is the only document reported to this project which describes a country of origin for any of the ydna-related Phelps lines. See the note below and the kit owner.

6/2017: Additional research by several people: A Frances Phelps is on the Buckingham Co, VA** tax list in 1789, 92 93 94 96.

From Kathie Mann: after 1796, he reappears in the Amherst** tax lists, then disappears again after 1801. In one of the years in Amherst, he has another male Phelps listed under him- the name is very hard to read- Contact Kathie to view the 1800 Amherst** Personal Property showing Frank Phelps and adjacent Phelps with the indecipherable first name. She only looked at tax lists to 1801 so far and the early marriages. I know JC Rogers has been to Nelson County. I'm unsure if he's done a thorough check of neighboring Amherst. Kathie has a late 1820's deed from a William "son of Frank" of Campbell Co, VA to a Thomas Phelps of Buckingham. [The reported son of Frank, William A. is said to be born 10 May 1807 PERHAPS in GA

** The early years (1789-1796) Francis was on the Buckingham County tax lists (not Albemarle), though this area was originally Albemarle. Amherst was also cut from Albemarle, the same time as Buckingham.

3. William Alexander Phelps b 28 Mar 1843 TN d. 31 July 1928 Where?? TN Civil war survey naming Ireland as the origin of his "grandfather"

Notes:

Ireland origins?: Using the civil war survey records of Robert and William, the reader can decide if the "grandfather" said to be from Ireland was that of the Phelps or the Boyd family. The kit owner has concluded it is the Phelps grandfather who was from Ireland because he found information that has identified this Boyd line as coming from Scotland through Pennsylvania. At the FAR end of this page is a PDF of the actual handwritten Tennessee survey responses. Walter Phelps added: Many from Wales emigrated to Ireland following the Norman Invasion of 1169 - 71. They were referred to as "Old English".

Virginia birth? An 1880 (important as it shows Grandparents birth places) Warren Co census record for a William Phelps b. abt 1810 is below:

1880 Census - District 1 - County of Warren - State Tennessee - Page 53 Supervisor Dist 2 Enumeration Dist 130 - 28 June 1880 Dwelling #252 - Family #265

Line 5 - Wm Phelps 70 Male Farmer Born in GA, Father in VA , Mother in GA

Line 6 - Rhoda Phelps 57 Female Wife Born in TENN, Father in NC, Mother in NC

Line 7 - Mattie Lemons 9 Female Born in TENN

Comments on the 1880 census: The kit owner can find no other William Phelps in Tennessee Census. He knows William died in Warren County (McMinnville) in 1898 so this is possibly his ancestor (however age is off by 2-3 years). Also William A. Phelps' son Marlin Monroe is shown in same county in 1880 census by the same enumerator. The new wife with her child from another marriage appears correct in time-line as William A. Phelps’ wife Matilda died in 1878.

Original comments by D Phelps 2016 or earlier: Notice that he describes his grandfather as having come from VA. How this relates to the Ireland comment is up for discussion and that is why we list origin as GA-VA-Ireland? at the top of the page. There is a Francis Phelps listed on Albemarle co tax records in Buckingham Co (from Albemarle Co) 1789 -1796 and this kit's ydna matches a likely family branch mutation marker of the Albemarle co Phelps line. In the ydna markers he shares a 13 at DYS439 with those of the Albemarle Phelps line. Ignore any differences in DYS448 since we know ftdna is in error there. Moving way out to the right notice his 11 (in DYS511 ) which is different from the 12 in the other Phelps lines, but does link him with the recently described 4th Phelps line. He shows a unique 14 in DYS461. Interestingly there was a Francis Phelps in Buckingham Co, VA (from Albemarle Co) on tax records 1789-1796 - unfortunately too late for Francis below. Thus the picture is unclear. Further ydna testing is in progress.

Source Documentation

1830 US Census (Bledsoe, Tennessee) has a Nancy Phelps born between 1780-1790 with 2 sons born between 1810 and 1815, 3 sons born between 1815 and 1820, and 1 son born between 1820 and 1825 living with her but no husband. It also showed a Robert Phelps and a William A. Phelps in separate households. My records from family accounts show 3 sons (numbers 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 above) this would jive with 1830 Census with Robert and William A. Phelps old enough to have married and separate households and Albert to still be living at home as one of the two sons born between 1810 AND 1815. William A. Phelps shows no children born by 1830 Census (matches fact that first child (Marlin Monroe Phelps was born in 1831) and Robert shows one child born between 1825 and 1830.

1840 Census Eastern District, Marion County, Tennessee shows the following:

Page 276 has Albert Phelps (age between 20 and 29) and wife (age between 20 and 29) and female child (age under 5).

1850 Census District 1, Marion County, Tennessee on 19 Sept 1850 shows the following:

Page (791 or 896) – Line 1, Dwelling and family 268

William Phelps (43) farmer and wife Matilda (43) both from Georgia. Children living in house were:

Marlin (M 19), Margaret (F 17), John (M 15), Francis (M 14), Robert (M 12), Martin V. (M 10), William (M 8), and Nancy (F 6). Mary Elizabeth does not show up as she died in 1849. Not explained is the last line of page which shows James Phelps in family 274 at age of 9 months. This matches James Hannibal Phelps born 21 Dec 1849 who should be in William’s family.

1860 Census District 4, Sequatchie County, Tennessee (Post Office - Dunlap on 18 June 1860 shows the following:

John B. (M 25), Franklin (M 23), Van Buren (M 19), William (M 19), Nancy (F 15) and Hannibal (M 10).

Also Nancy Phelps (F 73?) Living in dwelling 167 and family 141. I believe Hannibal age 10 is the James Phelps (age 9 months) shown with family 274 in the 1850 Census. Age matches and names do when you have family records that show him as James Hannibal Phelps of same age.

The Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaire – Volume 4 Confederate Soldiers Compiled between 1915 and 1922. 1,650 responded including 2 sons of William A. Phelps (0.2) – Robert Phelps (0.2.5) and William Alexander Phelps (0.2.7). These two Phelps are the only TN phelps listed in the current index at http://share.tn.gov/tsla/history/military/quest16.htm

Robert Phelps (Tennessee Pension #7980) was 83 and living at Charleston, Tennessee Route #3. He gave the following information:

- Discharged in Charlotte NC in 1865

- Went back to school and became a teacher and eventually a Baptist minister

William Alexander Phelps (Tennessee Pension # 9671) was 80 and living in Dunlap, Tennessee. He gave the following information:

- He was born in Sequatchie County, Tennessee

- His Confederate company was H of the 4th Tennessee

- Father was William Phelps, a farmer, born in Georgia who lived in Tennessee from 1810 till his death

- Mother was Matilda Boyd, daughter of Elliot Boyd who lived in Hamilton County, Tennessee

- He married and had 6 children – 3 boys and 3 girls. Five were alive at this time with the oldest child 50 and youngest child 33. Wife is 74 and still alive.

He had 3 brothers in the company with him Bob (assume Robert 0.2.5), Marlin (0.2.1), and Frank (0.2.6) all older and all deceased at this time. Note – This would mean that Robert filled this out before he died in 1921 and William after this in 1922.
