Other notes compiled by: Kathie Phelps Mann and JC Rogers

Note 1. On the 1850 Nelson census, James is 83 and his youngest son, James M. Phelps is listed as head of household. Besides this census, James M. Phelps’ marriage record and death records connect him to this James (b. 1768)- The first 1st marriage of James M. Phelps (to Maria Mitchell) occurred in Nelson and states James and Jane as his parents; his 2nd marriage record (to Susan Sills) stated being born in Nelson Co. Virginia; his death record states born in Nelson Co. Va.

Note 2. Seen in the 1810- 1830 census for Buckingham, 1840- 1850 census for Nelson County. Not to be confused with his contemporary, the “other” James of Buckingham- similar age, listed on separate censuses in the same years. • Nelson County Chancery case between James “of Nelson, formerly of Buckingham” and Jonathan P. Phelps. Jonathan (son of Captain Charles Phelps) is suing James Phelps, “son of William” over money owed the estate of Alexander died 1834, and money due the estate of Charles died 1829. Jonathan is co-executor on both estates. He also hauls Robert Phelps into the proceedings (Robert is also a co-executor). Jonathan is suing James to pay back both estates. This chancery case plainly states- James- formerly of Buckingham, now residing in Nelson; It also calls him “James, son of William”. See also (JC’s notes): Nelson County Virginia Deed Book 8, page 319-320, 1821: James’ debts to others (and notes signed) that lead up to the chancery case listed above.

James b. 1768 also has land in Buckingham, held from his wife’s father, Edward Linthicum. (Implied Deeds, Buckingham) See also: (JC’s notes) Nelson County Deed Book 9, pg. 354: 1838, James, William E., Jane and children. James gets consent to sell her father’s (Linthicum) land. William E. pays dollar and gets slaves Tom, Jane and Susan, 2 feather beds, household furniture for benefit of Jane.

Note 3: William E. Phelps, son of James b. 1768 and Jane Linthicum; death record (1862, Appomattox) states parents as James and Jane, wife Amanda.

Note 4: · Martha Phelps Pamplin, daughter of James b. 1768 and Jane Linthicum. Obituary of James Phelps, 2 September, 1856, Lynchburg Daily Virginian, page 3 column 1: funeral held at the home of Alexander Pamplin of Lynchburg. (The Pamplins are originally from Nelson). Burial for James Phelps also handled by Alex Pamplin- Diuguid Funeral Home records, Lynchburg, Va.

Note 5: Elizabeth “Bettie” Phelps, daughter of James b. 1768 and Jane Linthicum. 1850 Campbell/Lynchburg census, Bettie is in the household of Alex Pamplin and wife Martha Phelps. (next door to David B. Phelps). Bettie Phelps marries David Bell Phelps (David is son of Richard Phelps married Ann Bell of Amherst- Richard is another son of William d. 1811). See also: (JC’s notes) Nelson County Deed Book 9 pg. 5: 1839, James Phelps, Alexander Pamplin, Jane and children 3rd part; James receives 600.00 from Alex Pamplin out of Jane’s funds. Negros slaves and stock to revert to Betsy, daughter of James.

After Alexander Pamplin dies in 1876, Martha Phelps Pamplin is on the 1880 Campbell/Lynchburg census is in household of David B. Phelps, listing relationship as “sister in law”- this shows the relationship of sisters for Martha and Bettie, daughters of James and Jane Linthicum

Note 6 William E. Phelps and Amanda Moore, married: 30 May 1838. Daughter of William Moore and Martha Jones of Buckingham- married by the Rev. Gabriel Walker. (Lynchburg Virginian, 4 June 1838, page 3, column 3

Note 7: · Born: 10 May 1848 (Appomattox, Virginia) Died: 25 May 1915 Appomattox, Virginia. (Virginia Death records). George W. Phelps is on the 1850 and 1860 Appomattox Census with father William E. and mother Amanda. In the 1870 census, he’s in the household of his widowed mother, Amanda. In the 1880 census, George, wife Bettie, and 2 sons are with mother Amanda. Spouse: Mary Elizabeth Page

Note 8: Born 14 March 1886, Died 16 January 1963. Parents: Geo. W. Phelps and Elizabeth Page Phelps. (Virginia Death Records) Ira is on both the 1900 and 1910 Appomattox Census with both parents. As of the 1920 census, he is on the census with his widowed mother, his wife and children, in the same household

Note 9: · One other possible son of James b. 1768 and Jane Linthicum: Samuel Phelps of Nelson. Samuel dies in 1859 (1860 Mortality Census, Nelson) and Alexander Pamplin and Martha Phelps are given custody of his daughter, Mary “Mollie” Phelps. She is seen in the 1870 Campbell/Lynchburg census with them. Mary “Mollie” Phelps Jopling’s later obituary states that she “was raised in the household of her uncle and aunt, Alex Pamplin and Martha of Lynchburg, after the death of father Samuel”. (The Danville Bee, 21 December 1928, page 1, column 3). If Mary “Mollie” is the niece of Martha Phelps Pamplin, it would more than likely make her father, Samuel Phelps, a brother to Martha (and Bettie)- another child of James d.1768 and Jane Linthicum

·

Rogers reports:

  • there were two William E Phelps.
  • that the above connection was on the premise that James, the father of William E. was a son of William d. 1811. As of 2016, we don't know who William d. 1811's father is at this time. We know for sure he ended up with 300 acres patented by Thomas Phelps in 1756 on David's and Bridle creeks ADDED
  • 9/30/2016: After talking with Kathy and comparing my research done a few years ago with her research, I believe we both feel that James (married Linthicum ) does go in the William (d. 1811) line as a son so at this point I would recommend attaching this line to William (d. 1811)
  • The connection of the father of William E., (James Phelps who married Linthicum) as the son of William who died c.1811 was based solely on published abstracts of the RE tax lists by Roger Ward as I have not viewed the original microfilm in over 25 years or so. There are two entries Roger makes for a James S.W. which he proposes could stand for son of William which the surviving records tend to show to be true. One entry is for a number of years relating to one piece of property and the other is in relation to lands concerning the estate of Linthicum. In other words, James who married Linthicum may or may not be the same James who was son of William d.1811. James who married Linthicum may also not be a son of any William. A look at the original images is recommended. "Bent Creek" is a place as well as an area where the creek lies. Diuguidsville (where Bent Creek comes into the James River) came to be known as Bent Creek

yDNA Opinion of project admin, 7/16/2016: After extensive reviews of this kit's ydna str markers, the hints were found to be conflicting and misleading - no doubt due to the unstable nature of STRs. So expensive Big Y SNP testing was done on the major Phelps lines that resulted in the discovery of 3 SNP each which identified the major lines of this group. This kit was tested for all tlhe appropriate SNPs and was found positive for one of the James of Caswell d. 1786 SNPs. SNPs are once forever mutations. This dated the common ancestor at a theoretical time of around 1600 or so.

This branch of James Phelps (b. 1768) has genetic SNP mutations that match the line of the Phelps of Caswell, NC. They do not have the A6108 mutation of the other Buckingham Phelps line, nor do they have the mutations of the Albemarle Phelps group. More testing and research is needed to help define these different lines of Phelps.
