06B Phelps of Albemarle Co, VA.

Also visit the related Phelps YDNA Project here.  If you are a tested descendant of this line or have information to share you should join the private google group Thomas Phelps of Albemarle, VA d 1751

YDNA testing has confirmed that this line had a common ancestor with the other major Phelps lines in the 06 section although the common ancestor could be as far back as 1500.

As evidenced by the yellow highlighting in the provided lineages below, there are significant unresolved genealogical issues in some lineages.  After extensive SNP testing in 2015-2016 it became evident the Phelps from this area should be divided into those with and without  SNP A6108.  (See this page for SNPs used in genealogy.)  This SNP division was considered logical after expensive SNP testing by Phelps members at FTDNA with analysis at Yfull.com and ISOGG. See the COMMENT section on these Phelps for more information.  As of 1/2018 these men have been integrated based on the available  yDNA testing results and well researched genealogies.

Comment on this line's SNPs and STRS

The importance of  SNP A6108 and STR markers DYS449 and DYS439

Project admin's opinion 3/12/2016:  Look at the summary table of the traditional STR ydna here .   First, SNPs are far more reliable than traditional STR markers (shown on the FTDNA YDNA test) and are now being used for genealogy.  The 35 in STR DYS449 is now believed to be a mutation for a branch of the Thomas Felps of Md line.   34 is seen in the other Phelps of these highly related Phelps lines.     STR DYS439=12 is seen in most all the Phelps lines, yet 13 is seen in the Albemarle Phelps who are positive for SNP A6108 and whose genealogy continues to be a challenge.

A6108 is now shown on the FTDNA tree, under Z31501 (under M44).

8/2016  The two kits below, H1129 and  84867 (not responding) are now not considered to have ydna that would confirm a merger of their lineages.- mainly due to 84867 not having the very old SNP of the line of  H1129.  Thus there is no second confirming test needed to conclude the accuracy of either lineage.  There are two yDNA reasons for this mismatch:  their DYS439 is not the same but that alone would not be proof of a difference.  Of significant concern is kit 84867 does not have either of the 3 lineage indicator snps of H1129 - which date from the present back 500 years. The 3 SNPs were found at Yfull.com after comparisons of 6 Big Ydna tests.  Interestingly both are negative for the newly found family SNP branch A6108, which is a subgroup of Z31503, which all these Phelps have.  A6108 SNP is found in other tested descendants of the Albemarle county area.

3/10/2017  observations

A final test on kit 84867, the other descendant of Shadrack of KY, is complete.  This resulted in being negative for any Felps of Baltimore co.  Previous tests were negative for both the James of Caswell or the other Shadrack descendant kit H1129.   Both these kits descend from Shadrack, son of John Sr, assumed to be from Albemarle co, VA

Unless we find a new descendant test of the Shadrack of KY we may well have to conclude that both the descendant genealogies are suspect.  DNA tests for Kits H1129 and 87867 do not support one another, nor does either have the SNP A6108 found in all those tested  from Albemarle (including a Pond).   Yet ALL have the needed M44 SNP which narrows the Phelps lines from other major lines.  Keep in mind that the big y test of kit H1129 gave us 3 SNPs going back around 500 years, possible not as far back but certainly far back enough to include Thomas Phelps SR  d 1751.

Whether there was an Albemarle origin or not, we can say that one of the two genealogies coming from John Phelps Sr  and his son Shadrack of KY, H1129 and 87867, are invalid- or there was a NPE somewhere.

Whichever genealogy may be valid, neither  complies with the tested men of Albemarle Co (who have A6108).   There are several alternatives for resolution:

1..  If one of the two genealogies are valid and goes back to Albemarle, it requires 1) that the tested Albemarle men with A6108 are the result of a A6108 mutation in William Phelps, brother to John and Thomas of Albemarle.  This is possible and may well be correct.  or 2) the assumed tested descendant of William is not valid.

2.  The John Phelps of KY  (father to Shadrack) was not the John of ALbemarle.  (as of 6/2017 from yDNA testing, we know he is not the John of Bedford Co, VA, nor was he the John of Halifax Co, VA)

There may be more alternatives, but we have a great mystery that will remain without further testing on the KY descendants

.

1/2018 Revised approach:  Applying SNPs and STRs to the reported genealogy where possible

As stated in option 1 above, one key alternative is to conclude that the A6108 mutation occured in William d. 1749, son of Thomas Phelps d. 1751.  Due to the perplexing ydna test results with no more scheduled, and having well researched genealogies, the project administrator has chosen to show a reported genealogy tree below where ydna either supports it, or does not directly dispute it.  Doing that resulted in two occasions of apparent back mutation of DYS449 frin 13 to 12, very unlikely but possible.  It also required some private SNP mutations to occur more recently than previously suggested.

2015 Note by B. Emory: There is a chancery case filed in 1770 by James (son of William died 1749) over the lands left to him and his brother William jr. I am attaching the key page and the entire suit can be found here:  In that suit James states that his brother William has departed this life leaving him sole devisee and heir to the lands. This is important because in his father William (died 1749) will it states  I give and bequeath to my loving Father Thomas Phelps and to my loving brother Thomas Phelps Jr., all the rest and residue of my estate of what nature and kind soever in trust neverthless to be equally divided by them between my two sons James Phelps and William Phelps and by their heirs forever and for no other intent or purpose whatever and do ordain and appoint my said Father and Brother to be executors of this my last will and do by these presents revoke all other wills by me heretofore made.  The words by their heirs forever is important because if William Jr left heirs they would have been entitled to their fathers portion of those lands.
