yDNA Tested Lineages

After many years the Phelps project has finally found a matching second yDNA test which confirms the STRs of this line. Neither of these test match in any way to any other known yDNA tested Phelps line anywhere and is thus a new southern Phelps line. In addition to an ancestor submission by one testee, other Phelps researchers contributed greatly. This page's information was coordinated by D Phelps. JC ROgers, Mary Galgan, Christi Cirone, M. Galgan, D Payne provided much information We hope other descendants of this line will see a link and join our project.

CAUTION: While logged into FTDNA, all tested yDNA members of this project are viewable at the FTDNA yDNA page. Viewers of that page are cautioned that many recently tested members have chosen privacy options which prevent their yDNA display to non-logged in members. This currently includes the second tested member below.

This line is defined by FTDNA as Haplogroupo I-P37 with this comment: Haplogroup I dates to 23,000 years ago, or older. The I-P215 lineage is about 15,000 years old and began in southern Europe. Today it is found primarily in Sardinia and the Balkans. Haplogroup I represents one of the first peoples in Europe.

Lineages displayed here were provided by individual ydna kit members, or their representatives, who are solely responsible for providing any ethical or copyright credits..

The Phelps from Bedford Co, VA Revised 2017

This paper was originally written to research any possibility that a Phelps from this area was the father of James Phelps d1786 CaswellCo, NC. To date, no such connection has been found. It has evolved to be a collection of information about the genealogy of this Bedford line.

A great deal of help came from Chuck Featherston of Richmond, VA, Mary Galgan, Mark Phelps of Snow Camp, NC and JC Rogers of Appomattox, VA, ChristieCirone@comcast.net. In my search (D Phelps) for a James of this line who might be my James (of Caswell Co) I found one. He was James, a son of John Phelps d 1801. We now know this line was of an entirely different haplogroup from any other Phelps line.

Important information in this report is a Bedford Deed of 1815 naming Bedford Phelps living in Jasper Co, GA THIS DEED SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN LOST

The formation of Bedford Co:

  • 1702: Prince George formed in 1702 from Charles City

  • 1746: Lunenburg formed from Brunswick in 1746

  • 1752: Halifax formed from Lunenburg in 1752

  • 1753: Bedford formed from Albemarle and Lunenberg in 1753. F

  • 1764: Charlotte and Mecklenburg from Lunenburg

  • 1766: Part of Halifax used for Pittsylvania in 1766

Other background information:

Halifax and Bedford deed books and other materials contain many references to Phelps beginning in 1742 when the areas of these two counties were in Lunenberg Co.

Deaths and births were listed only in parish records in colonial times. Since marriages were sometimes only listed in parish records, I reviewed all the available parish documents. None of the needed area parish marriage, death and birth records remain in existence but Vestry minutes are often available. Those searched were Atrim 1752-1818 (Halifax); Cumberland 1746-1816 (Lunenburg); Camden 1767-1852 (Pittsylvania); St James 1744-1806 (Goochland). Russel parish (Bedford) was not available in Raleigh but in any case, its records start too late in m.

John Phelps, Col, of Bedford d.1772

John Phelps, Capt./Col. d 1772: This John was very prominent and appears often in records. Had a son John, but no James. From his willl Our Kin : the genealogies of some of the early families who made history in the founding and development of Bedford County, Virginia Published 1930 by Ackerly, Mary Denham SEE BELOW IN DOWNLOADABLE FILES "John Phelps, the first of the name of whom we have any authentic record, was already settled in Brunswick County, Va., when Lunenburg was taken from that county, and was one of the first Justices of the new county. He, with Matthew Talbot and others, was present at the first Court of Lunenburg County held May 5, 1746. When the increase in population made it necessary to form still another county from Lunenburg's territory, and Bedford came into being, we find John Phelps again at the head of affairs-"Justice of the Peace, and a Justice of the County Court in Chancery." He and William Callaway were Bedford's first representatives in the House of Burgesses, and from Hening's Statutes, Vol. VII, we learn that he was a Colonel in the Colonial Army. He died in Bedford County in 1772, and his will, recorded in Will Book "A" page 137, mentions wife, Mary; children: Jane, Judith, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Betty, John, and Aggey."

(Correction) Another book, Roots in Virginia, An Account of Captain Thomas Hale, by Nathaniel Claiborne Hale,, 1948 places John’s origins in Hartford, Ct. He is listed as a descendant of William Phelps b. 1599 Tewkesbury, England; Samuel Phelps b. England; Timothy Phelps b. Windsor CT 1656, Timothy Phelps b 1702 Hartford, CT, - but this has been largely discredited by lack of evidence and preliminary y-dna testing. (Further testing hopefully will end further speculation. This book was an account of Capt Thomas Hale However it does get it right in saying some of John's children moved to GA. This book was an account of Capt Thomas Hale. See the text here and evidence which may disprove the New England claim..

Here is the page from the Roots in Va book:

Using John’s will, it is curious that there is only one son. Could it be that the Caswell, NC James (d 1786)) could have been a son of this John – but was omitted from John’s will? Even more interesting is the possibility that a son Thomas was omitted from the will, considering the unknown origins of the "older Thomas" of Caswell, NC b 1727 (not Thomas the son of James of Caswell).

The following information was supplied by Mary Galgan:

....there is no evidence that he was a Col. He died in 1772 but no one knows when he was born...probably a little before 1704, because he was granted a patent in 1724 in Henrico Co., VA.

I don't believe anyone has proved who his parents were. We know his wife was named Mary, but her last name has not been proven. The Thomas, William, John, John line you have above is not correct. We do know some things about him. The following are some of the things we know for sure about him, because of recorded evidence:

- He was a member of the House of Burgesses, Justice of Court of Lunenburg Co. in 1746:

1746 - At May Court 1746 - Lunenburg Co., VA - John PHELPS, gentleman, was appointed to take a list of tithables in Lunenburg Co. from the Mouth of Otter River to the extent of the county upwards. John and Mary were in Brunswick Co., VA when Lunenburg Co. was formed from it. He was a member of the House of Burgesses, Justice of Court of both Lunenburg Co. in 1746 and in 1749 was a Justice in the County Court in Chancery, Lunenburg Co., VA, Order Bk. 2, 1748-1752, June Court 1749 p.146.

- He was appointed to take Tithables 1747 - June Court 1747 - John PHELPS, from Falling River to the extent of the county upwards, to take tithables. John PHELPS precinct from Falling River westward was sparsely settled. Lunenburg Co.,VA.

- He was a Coroner: 1748 - 2 June 1748 - John PHELPS, Gent. sworn as a Coroner of county. Lunenburg Co., VA, Order Bk. 2, 1748-1752, June Court p.10.

- He was appointed a Justice/Justice of the Peace: 5 June 1749 - June Court - Robert JONES, Henry EMBRY, John HALL, Wm HAYWARD, Matthew TALBOT, Field JEFFERSON (father of Thomas JEFFERSON) [corrected by Doug Payne to" Thomas Jefferson's paternal uncle" ; Peter Jefferson was his father], Wm WYNNE, James MITCHELL, David STOKES, Lewis DELONY, John PHELPS, W, HILL, John CALDWELL, Cornelius CARGILL, Abraham COOK, Hugh LAWSON, Thomas BOLLING, Liddal BACON, Thomas LANEAR, Robert Henry DYER, Wm CALDWEL, Peter FONTAINE, Abraham MARTIN, John COX, & Nicholas HAYLE Gentlemen, sworn as Justices of the Peace/Justices in the County Court in Chancery. Lunenburg Co., VA, Order Bk. 2, 1748-1752, June Court 1749 p.146.

- He was elected a Vestryman: 3 October 1749 - October Court. Vestrymen elected by freeholders & housekeepers of Parish of Cumberland, Lunenburg Co.: John EDLOE, Peter FONTAINE, junr, Field JEFFERSON, Francis EALEDGE, Wm EMBRY, Luke SMITH, THos BOULDIN, John PHELPS, John COX, Abraham MARTIN & Clement READ; each man signs conformable to doctrine of Church of England. Lunenburg Co., VA, Order Bk. 2, 1748-1752, Oct. Court 1749 p. 214.

- He was a Captain during the French & Indian War while living in Bedford Co., VA:

1750 - 3 July 1750 - July Court - John PHELPS, Gentleman, was appointed to take list of tithables &

give public notice of time & place. From Falling River to Goose Creek. Lunenburg Co., VA, Order Bk. 2,

1748-1752, July Court 1750 p. 278. And Francis ELLEDGE, John PHELPS, Wm CALDWELL, & Wm

POOL Gentlemen were sworn as Captains of the Foot in this County. Lunenburg Co., VA, Order Bk. 2,

1748-1752, July Court 1750 p. 290.

1756 - On the 20th of August 1756 Capt. John PHELPS was commissioned to command a Company of

Rangers to be raised in Bedford Co., VA to protect the settlers from the French and Indians in the area.

Added4/2017 by John Sinks: The 1756 date for John Phelps being commissioned as captain of the rangers seems to be in error. It was 1755. It appears that he was commissioned captain in August and in October commissioned colonel. See related pages from Order Bks 1A and 1B along with his commission as justice.in the downloadable files below.

1758 - Bedford Co., VA - September 1758 - 32d George II.

Money paid to the Militia of the County of Bedford, and for Provisions furnished by sundry Inhabitants

of the said county, viz.

To John Phelps, as captain (£2.8.0).

Information about military status: reported in the Phelps Families of America by a Benjamin T. Phelps, Ottawa, Ill, 1865 including that his great grandfather (this John d. 1772) was a colonel.in the British Army.

Comment from JC Rogers:

The original Phelps lands in Bedford were actually located on an outskirt of the City of Lynchburg and closer to there than actual Bedford. (JC Rogers)

JC Rogers, a respected researcher of the central VA Phelps lines, says he can tie John d 1772 and Mary Phelps of Bedford to Thomas d. 1751 Albemarle with land transactions and feel they are related perhaps closer than any of the other line to Thomas.

This is from "Virginia Wills Before 1799", Southern Book Co. Baltimore, 1958. Will Book 1, page 137. This does NOT agree with the book "Our Kin" SEE BELOW IN DOWNLOADABLE FILES which reported a wife Mary and another child, Aggey, nor with deed referenced below.

From "Our kin":SEE BELOW IN DOWNLOADABLE FILES the genealogies of some of the early families who made history in the founding and development of Bedford County, Virginia Published 1930 by Ackerly, Mary Denham He died in Bedford County in 1772, and his will, recorded in Will Book "A" page 137, mentions wife. From Charles Feathersston ccfeathers@juno.com : There are two places which Mary [as a wife] is identified; one is a deed filed in Brunswick County, Deed Book, Vol..No. 2 1744 -1755, 1764, Page No. 718 (537) and [in] the abstract of his will. Mary is not identified by name in his will as recorded, but is in the abstract. His will was dated 1771 and recorded in Bedford County Will Book No.1, Page 137, February, 25, 1772. Names mentioned in order are: my wife; Jane, Judith, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Betty, Aggy, and son John..Wife Mary and son John were executors of the will.

John Phelps d 1801 Introduction

John Phelps d 1801 is understood to be the son of John d 1772. Married first Jemima Turner and then Susan Younger in 1787 (source: Our Kin SEE BELOW IN DOWNLOADABLE FILES and ( Index to marriages Bedford Co. VA 1785-1870 ) ). His will of 1801 will named the children listed in the ancestry below including a James Phelps, This James appears not to have been the James (of Caswell Co) because James died in 1785, six years before this will was written. Additionally, a James married Ruth Grant in 1794 as recorded in Bedford marriages - currently known as James son of John d.1801 . The Caswell Co James’ wife was named Mary (and his mother was with him when he died).

Quaker References: REVISION 5/2017 By D Phelps: the Bedford Phelps references found in the “Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy Vol VI Virginia" are totally misleading. I allowed myself be totally misled. I am convinced there is zero evidence of a Quaker connection to the Phelps of Bedford. After spending hours researching everything I could find, I came to this conclusion. The Encyclopedia book VI, and references to it, are extremely misleading by listing probably all of the Bedford marriages giving the impression to the unassuming they are Quakers. I simply assumed the author would have written a warning. The evidence of this fault is when we go to Ancestry.com searching for the Bedford Phelps, they don’t show up. Moreover, using Ancestry, I was able with difficulty to find the actual handwritten Quaker name index to all of the minutes and marriages of that area. No Phelps listed (although the index is pages of poorly arranged pages. The original pages are said to be stored at Swathmore College. For those wanting to explore this, please contact me for Ancestry tips. This exercise did however give me much insight into the apparent truth that Quakers were highly present in early Bedford County.

The Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia Vol. II published by the Georgia DAR in 1941, compiled by Ettie Tidwell McCall (Mrs. Howard H.) included soldiers who were not from Georgia but whose ancestors were. It appears to be rather authentic, although no source is given for the Phelps line. The ancestry lists Lt. John Phelps of Bedford marrying Jemima Turner and Susanna Younger (1794). The children were named for each mother: 11 by Jemima; 6 by Susanna. Clearly this indicates a GA descendant placed their VA ancestry in this book.

John’s 1801 will left the plantation to wife Susannah and sons Overton, Robert and Glenn. He left 100 acres to Washington, William, and Randolph. He did not leave land to Thomas, Richard, James, John or any of the daughters.

1. John Phelps, Lt. d. 1801 m. Susanna Younger, 1787

For yDNA purposes the wives of John are not germane. However for those who are working with other dna types, extended comment by knowledgeable researcher christiecirone AT comcast.net comment is necessary. "Most of the related Phelps Families of America #804 is wholly incorrect and disproved. It should read, John Phelps (Lieut.), who died 1801, Bedford Co., VA (son of Col. John Phelps & Mary), m. 1) Jemima Turner, dau. of James Turner & Ruth Admire; m. 2) Miss Susannah Younger, dau. of John Younger & Ann Moss. This Lieut. John Phelps NEVER MARRIED a Miss Babbitt. However, his son, John Phelps III, d. 1815, Franklin Co., VA (my ancestor) did have a first wife (my ancestress) who was a Miss Bobbit (Bobit). So the two John Phelps (father and son) were unfortunately conflated, somehow, by the interviewer of recorder of this family’s history. So my ancestor John Phelps III (d. 1815, Franklin Co., VA), m. ca. 1785: 1) Miss. ____ Bobbit (dau. of William Bobbit & Lucy), who had 4 daughters: Mary “Polly” Phelps (m. John K. Ferguson); Nancy A. Phelps (m. James Hooper Burnett); Sophia Phelps (m. Moses Ferguson); and Susannah Phelps (m. Christopher William “Kit” Board).

Then, as a widower with four young daughters, John Phelps (d. 1815, Franklin Co., VA) m. his second wife: 2) Miss Mary “Polly” Ferguson; and had 3 more children: Rev. Richard T. Phelps m. Bethany Ellis Thurman; Evaline Phelps m. Samuel Arrington, and Permelia “Milly” Phelps m. William Greer Heptinstall."

In addition, "the source (“Key and AlliedFamilies” – below) for the gross error, that alleged Lieut. John Phelps’ (d. 1801) first wife was a Miss Babbitt. It is just simply and wholly incorrect. Lieut. John Phelps (d. 1801) m. 1) Jemima Turner; and 2) Susannah Younger. It was Lieut. John Phelps’ SON – John Phelps III (d. 1815, Franklin Co., VA), who m. 1st Miss ____ Bobbit (Bobit), dau. of William Bobbit & Lucy, of Bedford co., VA. This Miss Bobbit was my direct ancestress, mother of Sophia Phelps (b. 1793, Bedford Co., VA) who m. 1815 Moses Ferguson (b. 1794, Franklin Co., VA). After the death of John, his widow Susannah Younger Phelps remarried to William Campbell in Bedford Co. Some of John's children moved to GA. An important piece of GA evidence is a Bedford deed in 1815 which clearly names his 5 sons and 3 daughters who were in Jasper Co. Additional sources of information on the children of John d 1801

The following information about an Elbert Co, GA James is now considered to be a James of the Albemarle Phelps line... as discovered by extensive ydna SNP testing.

· A James of the line of Thomas d. 1751 Albemarle VA is shown in an 1800 Elbert Co deedbook F p119 , 20 Mar. It named James Phelps & Elizabeth his wife of Elbert Co. Ga. This deed is clearly identified to exclude James of Bedford. It shows a James and Elizabeth living in Elbert Co selling property owned in Campbell Co. VA. (See the deed in my article on William Phelps, d.1749, Albemarle, VA, son of Thomas Phelps Sr d.1751 of Albemarle Co, VA.) However, it is curious that a James of the Albemarle Phelps line from Campbell/Buckingham counties moved to GA near the same time as Phelps siblings from Bedford Co. See the evidence. This could imply a close family relationship of the two lines.

· 1809: James and Thomas Phelps, along with many other names, named in Elbert Co involving an inquisition of R. Lindsay. 7/13/1809 Elbert deedbook “M”

· Elbert Co. GA 1820 census: shows a James Phelps and wife, born before 1775, with son born 1804-1810. (1820 was the first GA census). No other public records have been found. This appears to be the James who moved from Campbell Co, VA.

· Liberty Co, GA 1820 census (some distance from Elbert): James E Phelps b bef 1775, wife b 1775-1794, 1 son <10, 1 son 16-20, 1 girl <10, 1 girl 10-16 Since we know there was a James & Elizabeth in Elbert Co in 1801 and he was not the Bedford James, it is conceivable that the Liberty James was the Bedford James..

Thomas Phelps The Thomas Phelps who remained in Bedford, VA

· b ca 1773 (Elbert Census records, IF he moved to Elbert Co, GA

· d. 1851in Bedford, VA if we use Our Kin SEE BELOW IN DOWNLOADABLE FILES , published 1930 states he died in 1851 with no supportive documents)

· m. Nancy Carter 01 Dec 1814. Source: Bedford County Marriages and Our Kin. ,1930. From the evidence below , the majority of indications are that a different Thomas moved to Elbert Co, GA around 1811. The 1814 Bedford marriage indicates the Elbert Co Thomas was not the Bedford CoThomas.

· Our Kin SEE BELOW IN DOWNLOADABLE FILES describes the children of Thomas, of Bedford Co VA, and even more about son Thomas Jefferson Phelps implying they all remained in Bedford.. Bedford marriages show Thomas of Bedford married Nancy Carter in 1814.

· 1820 Bedford VA census b bef 1775 (wife also) 2 sons <10, 1 son 16-20, 2 girls < 10, 1 girl 10-16. This cannot be Thomas’ son who was born in 1821.

· JC Rogers says I know Thomas’ son Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Jefferson's son, Thomas Key Phelps are buried in the Key-Phelps cemetery near Body Camp in Bedford VA.

The two Thomas Phelps in GA

1. A Thomas Phelps in Elbert, GA unknown origins. This Elbert county Thomas is now considered to be of the Albemarle line via SNP testing

    • 1809: James and Thomas Phelps named in Elbert Co involving an inquisition of R. Lindsay (no relationship implied) 7/13/1809 Elbert deedbook “M”

    • 1811: In Elbert he buys 100 a. on Doves Crk in Elbert Co from a William Phelps of Franklin Co (see below). Deep Creek Baptist Church is near Doves Crk and contains records of Phelps. This record is an indication that William and Thomas were related.

Two William Phelps in GA:

1. William Phelps m. Anney by 1808 (per GA deeds) from Bedford Co, VA Is in Jasper Co, GA by 1815. Source: see Bedford deed of 1815 below. Property records of Jasper have not been researched.

    • A marriage record exists for a William Phelps to Ann Johnson in Jasper Co 7/9/1816

2. Another William appears in Elbert Count deeds and must be of another Phelps line, possibly that of James and wife Elizabeth of the Thomas d 1751 Albemarle line

Elbert Co, GA deeds; Sources: Elbert Co Deed Books C, F, G, J, M. N, O 1795-1813.)

    • Received a headright or bounty grant in 1774 (Headrights and Bounty Grants of GA 1756-1909)

  • 1799: bought 100A on Doves Crk from *Absalom Stinchcomb.

  • 1804: buys 225 a. on Doves Crk.from Joseph King

  • 1805: Felps is on Doves Crk.

  • 1808: William Phelps of Franklin Co (adjacent to Elbert Co) sells 100 a. on Doves Crk. William’s wife: Anney

  • 1811: William Phelps of Franklin Co sells 100 a. Doves Crk to Thomas Phelps of Elbert Co. This record is an indication that William and Thomas were related.

  • 1811 Willliam Phelps of Franklin Co sells 225 a. on Doves Crk. William’ wife: Anney

*“A.Stinchcomb” was named in a 1800 Elbert Co .deed when a James and wife Elizabeth Phelps (of the Thomas d 1751 line) of Elbert Co sold property in Campbell Co, VA while they were in Elbert Co, GA. (see my write-up “ William Phelps (d.1749, Albemarle, VA), son of Thomas Phelps Sr ( d.1751 of Albemarle Co, VA”). Elbert Co, GA. Deedbook F p119: 20 Mar. 1800. James Phelps & Elizabeth his wife of Elbert Co. Ga. To William Bradley of Buckingham Co. VA for one hundred pounds VA. Money, 100 acres in Campbell Co. VA on Wreck Island Creek… formerly possessed by Shearer, at present possessed by Alexander Caldwell, signed James Phelps, Elizabeth (X) Phelps, Wit. James (X) Lee, John Penn, A. Stinchcomb, Regd. 12, Mar. 1800

Also: Elizabeth Ann Stinchcomb was named in a 1846 Phelps marriags in Elbert Co – see below.

I see one Betsy Phelps who was dau of John Phelps d. 1801. and Susannah Younger in Bedford Co, VA She could have been of marriage age in 1818, but her mother took most of the children to Georgia to some bounty land owned by her husband... This would have been about 1802-3.

THE FOLLOWING LINE IS NOW CONSIDERED TO BE OF THE ALBEMARLE CO PHELPS LINE, BASED ON YDNA TESTING.

This is her deceased husband's line.... research starting with the notes her mother-in-law left from her 60s and 70 research.

Jefferson Davis Phelps

Dora Phelps Maxwell

8. Reuben (Rubin)Phelps abt. 1823 (based on census)

Her evidence that Thomas Phelps [apparent Thomas of early Elbert] married Christian J. Staples, daughter of David S. and Fanny Mandley Staples follows:

    1. She has a letter written in 1997 by Dora P. Maxwell and notarized that Thomas Phelps, who came to Elbert Co.from Bedford Co, VA, was married to Christian J. Staples [no date/location] based on the family info. Dora was a daughter of Jefferson Davis Phelps, son of John Phelps b. 1821. Info handed down by the family through Jessie Norris Phelps, born 1861, died 1955 Bedford continually changed in relation to the Wreck Island location in Buckingham. See my associated maps How close to to James & Eliz Phelps of the Wreck Island area depends on when they moved from "Bedford".

    2. "Charles W. Christian Exe of the Will of Fanny Staples dec'd makes the following returns to the Ordinary of Elbert County November Thurs.1851." Re'd of C. W. Christian Exec in the Estate of Fanny Staples de'c and trustee for Christian Phelps my mother who is now also dec'd her children being the (two word I can't read)in her estate thirteen 55/100 dollars it being one equal share in her estate re'd by me this 1st (?0 1849 Signed: Thomas (his mark) Phelps, Jr. These records are dated 1851. Then it has names where different people received amounts of money. Included are: Thos. Phelps - $13.55, David S. Phelps- $12.50, Reuben Phelps-12.50, David S. Phelps- 12.50, Reuben Phelps-$12.50, David S. Phelps-$315.45. It also lists about 15 other names who received money. At the bottom of this page it starts with the different numbers and written as I previously sent in regard to Thomas Phelps for each of the names above...basically numbers 22 - 26. After that is a list of the items sold and who purchased with amount paid in order to set. Cpied it from the Georgia Archives back in the 1970s. There are 7 pages. On the back it says" Photocopy form Elbert County Ordinary Court,Bk or Vol S (or 5) Dates 1846-1851, page 189,Date copied Feb. 18m 1871 Dr. 93, Box 21 and 22

The Christian Phelps who Thomas received money for, was a daughter of Fanny Staples would be the wife of Thomas Phelps,Sr.

The Brown family that Thomas Phelps was living with in the 1850 census was a nephew... the son of Christian Staples sister, Lucy, who married a Brown.

and evidence to discredit the New England connection

I am copying here from page 162 the text concerning the Phelps family. Most researchers feel there is no support for the New England connection.

" William Phelps (I) born 1599, emigrated from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England, to Massachusetts in 1630. His son Samuel Phelps (II) born in England in 1625 died in Windsor, Connecticut, May 24, 1669, married on November 10, 1652 at Windsor, Connecticut, Sarah Griwold, daughter of Edward and Margaret Griswold. They had a son Timothy Phelps (III) born at Windsor, Connecticut, October 26, 1656, died at Harftord Connecticut, in 1714, who first married Sarah Gaylord, and second, on November 13, 1690, Sarah Pratt, born at Hartford 1662, died February 18, 1758, daughter of Daniel Pratt. Their son Timothy Phelps (IV), born at Hartford May 24, 1702 married Sarah Brown and had a son John Phelps (V), born at Hartford January 29, 1728, died 1772, who moved south, settled on the James River in Virginia and became a Militia Officer in Bedford County. He had a son John Phelps (VI) who married, 1st, Miss Turner, born 1750, died 1790, by whom he had eight children; and 2nd, Miss Babbitt abut 1791 by whom he had four sons and five daughters, all of whom moved to Georgia with their mother after the death of their father. Among these presumably was Emily Phelps (VII) who married John Tobin."

The Y-dna and ancestry of this New England line is here https://sites.google.com/site/archivedydnaphelpsgenealogies/01-04-new-england-and-related-lines/william-phelps-b-c1593-crewkerne-somerset-england-d-1672-windsor-hartford-co-ct

The 1772 death of the John (V) conforms to the first John d.1772 in this paper. The John (VI) could be this paper's John d 1801 who had two wives and 17 children; Turner is agreed to, but not Babbit. New research does confirm the movement of some children to Georgia.

An argument to discredit an New England connection was made by Mary Galgan:

The facts prove that the John Phelps, we call "John of Bedford", was not from the New England line of William of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England, (below)

Here's some proof.

1 - John bought property in 1725 telling us he was of age and born prior to 1705 and in Henrico Co. (presentday Buckingham Co, VA) by 1725:

1725 - Henrico Co., Patent Book 12, p. 406. A certain tract of land containing 100 acres of New Land, lying about South side of James River in the County of Henrico, Beginning at the mouth of Bear Garden crook thence up the river to ALEXANDERs. 10 Shillings. 24th Day of March 1725. - signed John PHELPS

Source - Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. III, p. 301.

Sold some of same property proving it was John & Mary Phelps who owned this property:

1741 - 2 November 1741 - From John PHELPS & Mary his wife to Robert BABER of Caroline County, Va for £55 all that tract of land in Parish of St. James about 250 acres bounded by the mouth of Bear Garden Creek, Thomas & John PHELPS. Signed John PHELPS his wife Mary PHELPS. Mary made her mark "C". Witnesses: Isaac BATES, William COCKERHAM, Robert BABER, Jnr. Recorded 15th March, 1742. Deeds of Goochland County, VA 1741-1745, page 137 & 147.

1742 - Deeds of Goochland County, VA 1741-1745 on p. 147. 2 Feb. 1742 Grantor - John & Mary PHELPS to Grantee - Robert BABER.

2 - Another early purchase for John of Bedford:

1733 - Goochland Co., VA Patent Book 15, 1732-35, p. 105. On 17 August 1733 John PHELPS purchased 400 acres beginning at a corner of a former patent of his standing on the south side of the Rivanna & adjoining land of SHELTON (sic - SKELTON) and others. He paid 40 Shillings or 2 Pounds.

1734 - "John Phelps qualified as undersheriff July Court, 1734. Source: Virginia Historical Magazine, Vol. 23, p. 84; also from Vol. 23, p. 84, "Notes from the Records of Goochland Co.":

John & Mary sold property purchased on 17 August 1733:

1737 - Goochland Co., VA, Bk. ,p. 26. Deed 15 March 1736/7. John PHELPS of Goochland Co., VA and Mary, his wife, to Thomas PHELPS of same, for 20 pounds, land on Rockie branch, on line formerly called SKELTON's, 250 acres. Wit.: Arthur HOPKINS, David DUNCAN, Wentworth WEBB (X). Signed: John PHELPS. Recorded 17 May 1737.

John PHELPS, Will

Dated:______ (left blank) 1771

My daughters Jane, Judith, Sarah, Ann one shilling sterling each.

My daughter Mary bequeathed Hanna and one shilling sterling.

My daughter Bettey (sic) 44 acres beginning at the corner white oak near the mouth of Hunts Spring Branch..... to the middle Branch....to dividing line.

My son John PHELPS all the land that I possessed with, also bequeathed Dick and Rachel, and "as a legacy" my riding horse, bridle and saddle and my wearing clothes.

My daughter Aggey bequeathed Old Jack and young Dick.

My beloved wife bequeathed Lucy [APPARENTLY A SLAVE], Desire that the estate may remainin my wife's hands during her life or widowhood and at her decease the estate to be brought to an appraisement and equally divided between John PHELPS, James TURNER "Juner" and Nath TURNER.

(Note from Mary: This will was not fully dated, did not name specific executors, was not signed or witnessed.) Court 25 Feb 1772, Bedford Co., VA: "This writing purporting the Last Will and Testiment of John PHELPS, Gentleman, deceased, was Exhibited into Court by Mary and John PHELPS and on Examination of divers Witnesses who deposed that the said John PHELPS deceased at the time of his last illness (when in perfect senses) did declare and aclnowledge the Same in their presents...." Ordered to be recorded. Mary and John PHELPS obtained letters of administration with the will annexed. Security: William AUSTIN and Henry STRATTON. *Note for above - The Nathan Turner is a son of James Turner who by gift gave Nathan 200 acres in 1761 & Nathan gave or sold to John Phelps, Jr. in 1762. There is a brother of Nathan named James who would have been a Jr. )

From Mary Galgan: John's Will does not say that Lucy was his wife. John's Will doesn't name his wife. She is referred to as his "Beloved wife". Note: That this will was a little suspect, at the time, because 1- it was not fully dated, 2- did not name specific executors, 3- was not signed or witnessed. "A" Mary and John PHELPS had to go to court to obtained letters of administration for the will. We can "assume", but ONLY assume that the Mary was his wife....BUT it could have been his daughter, Mary, if his beloved wife passed before he did and rewrote his Will. So there are 2 Marys that it could have been...no Proof here that it was his wife! ... My last entry for John & Mary was in 1753. That's almost 20 years before this Will. I'm not sure we can PROVE that this is the same John.

NOTE: Abstract of the Will of John Phelps, filed 2/25/1772, Bedford Co: Son named John; daughters were Jane, Judith, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Betty. This is from "Virginia Wills Before 1799", Southern Book Co. Baltimore, 1958. Will Book 1, page 137. This does NOT agree with the book "Our Kin" SEE BELOW IN DOWNLOADABLE FILES Published 1930 by Ackerly, Mary Denham which reported a wife Mary and another child, Aggey, nor with deed referenced above

Names mentioned in order are: my wife; Jane, Judith, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Betty, Aggy, and son John.. Wife Mary and son John were executors of the will.

OLD 1852 DOCUMENT -- 18 NAMED SLAVES BEDFORD COUNTY, VA

8 page document 8 x 12 ½” stitched together and entitled: A LIST OF SALES OF PROPERTY BELONGING TO THE ESTATE OF THOMAS PHELPS DECEASED, SOLD ON THE 6TH DAY OF JANUARY 1852. This sale was conducted in Bedford County, Virginia, although it is not so-stated in the document.

The original was advertised for sale around 2005. It is also listed in: A Guide to the Bedford County (Va.) Thomas Phelps Estate Sale Inventory, January 1852

Barcode number 1166126 A Collection in the Library of Virginia

The first three pages list the names of various buyers and describes the property each purchased with prices. Includes all sorts of farming equipment, livestock & tools. The fourth & fifth pages detail all of the property taken by Thomas Phelps widow Nancy, which includes many household goods, furniture, clothing & dry goods, some food & livestock, etc.

The last three pages consist of a quite interesting system for the ALOTTMENT OF ELEVEN SLAVES from the estate to various members of the family, and the outright sale of others.

11 slaves are drawn by lot and then money is used adjust any difference between the appraised value of the drawn slave and an average(?) value of $637.00.

MOTHERS AND CHILDREN & MEN AND THEIR WIVES ARE APPARENTLY KEPT TOGETHER IN THE ASSIGNMENT OF LOTS.

The inventory lists:

Jim valued $675

Betsey valued $550

Francis valued $525

Ralph & Lucinda valued $650

Louisa valued $533

Sarah & Ellis valued $700

Rachael & two children Harriet & Edmund valued $825

Other slaves in addition to these drawn lots, most listed by name (John Flora, Nathan, Darrow, Amarilla & 2 children) are sold off separately (valued at between $200 and $850) to family members (Thomas’ widow Nancy Phelps, and to his sons(?) Thomas J. and John H. Phelps.) Total of 18 slaves in this inventory sale.

Some expected stains and wrinkles to the paper, large brown stain on the back pages (see scan). Spine is sewn together. All pages are intact with some edge wear & tear, but otherwise in good condition & paper has quite good rag content. Scan shows front, one interior page (slave lots), and reverse. A rare old antebellum Virginia slavery / African American history document with unusual insight into America’s “Peculiar Institution.”

Narrative of John Phelps Born 1796 Virginia - Died 1874 Illinois Lived in Tennessee between 1815 - 1827

Contributed by Gordon Merrit See at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnsumner/phelps1.htm This narrative is described by Mr. Merrit : gmerritt783 AT yahoo.com below It was found at http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/libraryarchives/collections/ stated as “One of the nation's premier collections of published and unpublished materials essential to researching family lineage and history.” "This is John Phelps own narrative, except for the small part at the end, that is written in the second person after his death. It was originally written by John Phelps, or probably dictated to his daughter Sarah Phelps Johnston in 1861 and an addition was done later (in 1874?). I typed a copy from a typescript carbon copy made from an original written copy in the 1920's by his legal secretary by lawyer John Phelps Fridley, of Grand Rapids, Michigan. A condensation was published by John Phelps' grandson Termolean Oscar Johnston, in 1874, as an obituary for John Phelps in his paper, the Ogle Co. Republican. Various family lines of descendants of John Phelps have a copy of this work. The family mailed a written copy of the earlier section to Lyman Draper at the Wisconsin State Historical Society. This society also has a typescript of the newspaper summary, obituary article. I received the 1861 partial written copy from the Wisconsin State Historical Society, and compared it to the typescript copy of the whole narrative. I did not notice any material difference in this story in any of the copies. If the legal secretary made 1920's spelling changes in the typed copy she made, I changed it to reflect the written copy's spelling. There was a 1930 novel about the "Prarie Pirates" which told a little of the life of John Phelps. It did not quote his narrative.

Revision 3/2014 by Gordon Merrit: : "Some of this negative Ogle County history was told in local county histories of Ogle county and surrounding counties, and by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., in his description of travels in Ogle County, and in "A History of Illinois" by Governor Thomas Ford in 1854. Circuit Judge, and later Governor Thomas Ford was a friend of John Phelps from his days in Galena in 1820's and in the 1830's in Ogle County when they were neighbors. (Judge Ford convinced John Phelps to provide his children the best educations possible. It paid future dividends for their families, who became wealthy and well educated)."
