YEAR 11 Life Science
Aims
Life Science will allow students to explore Science theory in broad contexts and ask questions about the world they habit. This course will include a range of practical skills and knowledge, that are important for students to understand and succeed in the world around them. They will learn to observe closely, develop practical investigative skills, analyse Science information that is presented to the public and carry out both research and experiments to explore topics of interest.
Course Content
Four to Six units from the following topics, will be class selected at the beginning of the year:
Science in the Media - Truth or Trash? Students evaluate popular media claims (e.g., vaping, diets, cosmetic safety, climate change) using scientific evidence.
The Secret Life of Microbes -The role of microorganisms in health, food, and the environment.
Tiny Worlds - Biomes and Biodiversity - Investigating ecosystems on both macro and micro scales.
Science of Horticulture - Understanding plant growth and propagation
Car Science and Mechanics - Exploring the science behind vehicles including safety, maintenance, simple mechanic
Chemistry in Art & Beauty - The science behind cosmetics, dyes, and pigments.
CSI: Classroom Science Investigators - Forensic methods including bones, decomposition, DNA analysis, fingerprints, blood and fibres
Cosmic Science – Space, seasons and you - Understanding our universe and its influence on the Earth
Medical Science - The study of human body systems, disease and treatment
Genius Project - Independent study and investigation on a topic of interest.
Assessment
In class assessment via portfolio and presentations of their investigative work.
Prior knowledge required
A satisfactory level of achievement in Year 10 Science.
Next Step
Level 2 Chemistry and/or Level 2 Biology and/or Level 2 Physics - Entry by negotiation with the HOD.
