NCEA Level 3 Geography
Aims
To develop in students an understanding of the environment and the processes that interact to produce the home of people; and to foster in students a balanced view of, and respect for the environment on all levels. Students are helped to understand past and present cultural factors and processes, and which are relevant to today’s global, national and local environmental and planning issues.
Course Content
Natural processes — the natural processes and interactions involved in the creation and modification of New Zealand’s environments, specifically coastal processes and their operation within Dunedin’s coastline.
Cultural processes — the cultural processes and interactions involved in the production of spatial variations in geographic phenomena on local, regional, national and global scales, specifically tourism and tourism development in Bali.
Skills
Thinking - Gathering, understanding, organising, evaluating and presenting information
Valuing - Identification of personal and other people’s value positions, recognising stereotypes, analysis of conflict in terms of facts and value positions, and identifying areas of agreement and disagreement
Practical - Observing, gathering, measuring, interpreting, presenting data; constructing simple graphs, maps; interpreting maps, graphs, tables, photographs and models; understanding and carrying out simple field investigations
Social - The ability to function in a group
Assessment
There are a variety of assessment tasks and school examinations. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year.
Qualification gained
Full course completion — 23 credits in NCEA Geography Level 3

Prior knowledge required
NCEA Level 2 Geography Achievement Standard 91244 or
Level 1 Numeracy plus English Achievement Standard 91101 or equivalent, in order to show adequate literacy and numeracy skills.
Exceptional circumstances may be considered on an individual basis after consultation with the HOD and the Year Level Dean.
