NCEA Level 3 Music

Aims

Students learn how to work individually and collaboratively and to explore ways of creating, interpreting and representing ideas within music. Students have opportunities to further their own creative potential as they sing, play instruments, read symbols and notations, record and analyse and appreciate music. As students learn to communicate musically with increasing sophistication, they lay a foundation for lifelong enjoyment of and participation in music.

Level 3 provides students with a choice of courses:

  • Making Music or

  • Music Studies — in depth study of music scores, music periods, and styles or

  • a combination of both courses.

  • Musical knowledge

  • Music technology

Assessment

There are a variety of assessment tasks and school examinations. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year. The course will be made up from a mix of the standards shown below.

Qualification gained

NCEA Music Level 3 - full course completion a maximum of 24 credits.

This can be made up from a range of the above achievement standards. A minimum full time course is 18 credits.

Prior knowledge required

Prior knowledge acquired through NCEA Music Level 2 is preferred or performance students should have a background in music. Direct entry is possible after consultation with TIC Music, HOD Arts, and Year Level Dean
