NCEA Level 2 English
Aims
NCEA Level 2 English course continues to develop appreciation and enjoyment of language and literature. This is the last year that English is compulsory. For students who wish to attend university, they must achieve 5 credits in Reading and 5 credits in Writing to gain University Literacy. These can be gained in English at Level 2.
Course Content
Literature studies are an integral part of the course. A range of texts from novel, short story, poetry, and Shakespeare could be included. Both creative and formal writing are covered and emphasis is given to the development of the literary essay. Close reading skills of written texts are also developed.
Assessment
There will be a variety of internal assessment tasks and a practice school examination. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year. Standards and tasks undertaken may be tailored to specific classes and/or students.
Qualification gained
Up to 21 credits in NCEA English Level 2 taken from a range of standards indicated below.

Please note that students require ten Level 2 literacy credits if they wish to attend university: five credits in Reading and five credits in Writing. This may be subject to change. Some degree areas at tertiary level may have specific literacy entry requirements and students are encouraged to thoroughly check requirements for specific courses and or specific universities.
