NCEA Level 3 Dance

This may be taught as a composite Level 2 and Level 3 class.

Aims

  • Work in a creative environment that deepens perceptions while strengthening social values and interactions

  • Integrate thinking, moving and understanding using dance elements, vocabularies, processes and technologies to challenge and express personal, group and cultural identities

  • Generate, develop and refine literacies in dance vocabularies and processes with your own (and other peoples') choreographic ideas being explored and produced

  • Communicate meanings, feelings, and interpretive understandings of the world using a variety of Dance genres and contexts

  • Use traditional and new technologies to engage with histories, features and issues of performance while critically analysing and reflecting on your own and other creators' practices from different contexts

Content

Dance Choreography - Selects and applies rehearsal processes, performance skills and production technologies to enhance the communication and expression of dance works

Dance Performance - Extends and refines skills, practises and use of technologies in a range of dance genres and styles

Dance Perspectives - Investigates, analyses and discusses the features, histories, issues and development of dance in New Zealand, including the contribution of selected individuals and groups

Assessment

There will be a variety of internally and an external assessed standards selected from the table below. Performances range in scale with site specific and studio dances. Students need to choreograph and rehearse and reflect using some of their own time to complement the course. A brief portfolio, predominantly filmed with clips from class and a variety of evidence (photo’s, graphs, sketches, lists, scripts, plans, observations and evaluations), is collated to support the practical work.

Qualification gained

Full course completion – 18 credits in NCEA Dance Level 3
