Clubs and Organizations Requirements

Student eligibility will be determined by the following criteria. These include:

  • Students entering the high school from the middle school, or any other eighth grade school, will be eligible to participate in club or organization during their first marking period.

  • Initial eligibility for participation in any interscholastic sport is based upon the grades from the marking period preceding the activity for the second, third and fourth quarter. Eligibility for the first quarter is based upon the final grades from the preceding year.

  • All athletes and club participants must be in accordance with the school’s attendance policy

  • All athletes and club participants must receive at least five Carnegie units of work towards graduation with a grade of 65 or above in each marking period.

  • Eligibility for the first quarter is based upon the final grades from the preceding year for 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. Following the first quarter, eligibility for participation in athletics, extracurricular clubs, or organization for all students will be based upon the grades from the marking period preceding the activity for the second, third quarter.

  • All club and organization members must have earned a grade of 65 or above in five (5) classes the quarter prior to the activity. Additionally, they must not have any unserved disciplinary consequences or be classified as chronically absent (absent from school or more than 18 days for the year).

  • A student must have attended at least half of the school day to be eligible for that day’s activity (game, competition, meeting, or practice). This also includes attendance in school on Friday for a full day to be eligible to participate on Saturday or Sunday. The Administration may make an exception before the student’s departure from school for that day.

  • No student below grade nine is allowed to practice or participate in any club or organization without the permission of the Principal.

Available Clubs

Students who participate in clubs and after school sponsored activities will be held to the same standards as student athletes. This includes maintaining eligibility status as established in our athletic handbook and discipline standards as outlined in this handbook.

Art Club -This club works after school developing stage sets and costumes for drama productions and concerts. When not doing this the students explore personal areas of interests in the arts.

Alternative Energy Club - This club works with a variety of alternative energies from wind, solar and hydro to electric and geothermal. One of the primary projects is to build an alternative energy vehicle every year and race it at Lime Rock Park.

Anime Club - Students explore the art of anime and produce original works of art.

Best Buddies - Best Buddies fosters one-to-one friendships between students with and without IDD. Best Buddies High Schools helps break through social barriers at an important time in a young person's life.

Chess Club - Students compete against each other after school.

Debate Club - This Debate Teams is a competitive team which debates other schools around the state through the Connecticut Debate Association.

Drama Club - The purpose of the Drama Club is to introduce students to live theater. The focus will not be solely on putting on a production, but rather on the elements necessary to create theater.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) - FBLA prepares students for the world of business. State and National competitions are held in such business skill areas as computer operations, accounting, word processing and others.

HOPE Club - Students work within the communities of Seymour, Oxford, Beacon Falls, or other Valley towns, assisting various public service agencies as they perform services to improve the quality of life for those in need.

Link Crew - This club is for Juniors and Seniors who would like to assist Freshman as they transition to high school. In addition link crew students often assist in after school events and lead discussions during advisory.

Literary Magazine/Newspaper - Members edit and publish original fiction and non-fiction submitted by both students and staff. These publications are sold to members of the school and members of the community at a nominal cost.

Performing Arts - The purpose of the Performing Arts Club is to introduce students to live contemporary musical performances. The focus will not be solely on putting on a production, but rather on the elements necessary to create a live rock concert.

Student Council - Student council takes on the responsibility of representing the whole student body. The student council voices the needs, wants and concerns of the student body to the administration (i.e. principals and teachers). They are also responsible for encouraging school spirit through initiating school spirit events.

Spanish Club - The purpose of the Spanish Club (La Alianza Epanola) is the practice of Spanish and the familiarization of the club members with Hispanic-American customs.

Yearbook Staff - The yearbook staff sells ads to raise funds, writes copy, designs page layouts, takes pictures, and sells and distributes the school yearbook.
