SHS Absent from School/Truant Procedure

  1. Each absence will receive an automated phone call.
  2. On the fourth unexcused absence in a month or the 10th unexcused absence for the school year a statutory parent meeting will be called. All parental meetings will occur at 7:10 or 2:05.
      1. To discuss the impact of absence on their child’s performance and the long term effect of being absent on their preparation for college or the work force.
      2. To inform parents that their child may be referred to the court system for truancy.
      3. To inform parents that their child will lose privileges until they attend school regularly with no unexcused absences for a month. Loss of privileges includes participation in any extracurricular activities including athletics, clubs and attendance at senior activities, dances and prom. Students may be subject to loss of GPA weights, honor roll inclusion, honor society status, scholarship participation, and other awards as necessary.
  3. If the parent fails to attend the statutory meeting or otherwise fails to cooperate with the school attempting to solve the attendance/truancy problem, the school may file a written complaint pursuant to CGS Sec. 46b-149 alleging that the child’s family is a family with service needs. CGS Sec. 10-198a(c)
