Academic Performance Standards

Connecticut Public Act Section 10-223a states that “each local and regional board of education shall specify the basic skills necessary for graduation, and include a process to assess a student’s level of competency in such skills.”

In order for a student to earn a Seymour High School diploma, the student must earn a minimum of 26 credits for the class of 2022 and beyond. They must also meet the credit distribution requirements and the district’s academic performance standards.

Academic Performance Standards

Students will have demonstrated mastery of the following district performance standards (in addition to the required credit requirements) for those who have been enrolled in Seymour High School for at least three (3) consecutive semesters before graduation include.

  • Students will think critically and inquisitively

  • Students will communicate effectively and creatively

  • Students will access, evaluate, and use information for a variety of tasks and purposes

  • Students will master appropriate content and skills from a variety of disciplines

Special Needs: Students with special needs may be exempt from district performance standards for graduation as described in this policy if so indicated in their Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Administrative Regulations:

  1. All students are required to carry at least six (6) courses each semester unless otherwise determined by the school counselor and administrator. Students graduating in 2022 and beyond will earn a minimum of 26 credits within four years. Freshmen must take Physical Education, sophomores must take a health class. (Program of Studies booklets for the following school year are available on our website.)

  2. Extracurricular Participation: Students who would like to participate in any extracurricular activities including athletics, prom, class functions, and clubs must have earned a grade of 65 or above in five (5) classes the quarter prior to the activity. Additionally, they must not have any unserved disciplinary consequences or be classified as chronically absent (absent from school more than 18 days for the year). Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege afforded to all students provided they maintain the academic, behavioral, and attendance standards of Seymour High School.

  3. Auditing Previously Taken Courses: In order to be eligible, a student must first carry six (6) other courses for credit. The student must obtain written permission from his/her administrator. The auditing student has the obligation to cooperate in class to the same extent as any of the other students. Should a student fail to meet all of his/her responsibilities, he/she will be dropped from the course. The student will receive no credit for the course, but the grade will appear on his/her transcript. Also, the course will not count towards the calculation of the student’s GPA or QPA.

  4. Change of Name, Address, or Telephone Number: Students who change their name, address, or telephone number during the school year are to notify both the Guidance Office and the Main Office as soon as possible. Official notification by the student is necessary in order that the school may maintain accurate, current information.
