Her advice for future grade 5’s students is to work hard and could help you get things you want in life.

Sidney Elementary learns SENĆOŦEN

Each Monday morning, one of our Indigenous students leads the school in learning a SENĆOŦEN word during our morning announcements.  We are currently learning how to count in SENĆOŦEN.  Throughout the week, teachers continue to practice the words in their classrooms until we have a new word the following week.

All students and staff are enjoying practicing and learning to count in SENĆOŦEN!

The Salish Weave Collection Visits Sidney Elementary

Our week began with students finishing their study of the Salish Weave collection. Intermediate students worked with their kindergarten buddy classes to draw inspiration from the collection and use our tool carts to create their Salish shapes. The highlight of the week was when masterful local storyteller, Tobey Joseph, came into our school and shared stories with our students from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Students and staff were left in awe and we can't wait to have Mr. Joseph back next year to share even more stories.

Florence is an absolute pleasure to know, such a kind and caring individual. She will miss having her friends from Sidney around, but can’t wait to go to the same school as her Sibling ZuZu. I know you will have a blast at North Saanich next year, have a great summer Florence!

Rock Your Mocs!

Rock Your Mocs is an annual week-long campaign starting November 14 that promotes cultural pride by encouraging Indigenous peoples to share their stories through posting photos of their moccasins.

As part of #RockYourMocs week when Indigenous people across the world are invited to share images of their traditional attire, Itinerant Keira went around to Elementary schools in the district showing off her traditional Northern Dene style regalia, including beaded moccasins, graduation stole, tanned hide purse, and parka. The children got to pass around the items, feeling the fur and hide, admiring the detailed beadwork.
