Hello, my name is SEX̱SOX̱ELWET (Lorelei McEvay). I am First Nations from here in W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich), and grew up on the W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) reserve. I come from the Elliott, Bartleman, Paul, and Underwood families here on the Saanich Peninsula.

I am very happy to be here again at ḰELSET Elementary this school year. I am currently the SENĆOŦEN Language and Culture teacher here at ḰELSET. I have been working part time, one afternoon per week, at ḰELSET since the end of the school year in 2019, however I am now at the school on a more regular basis. Due to my increased time with our students at ḰELSET I am able to offer more SENĆOŦEN lessons at the school, so each class is now receiving weekly lessons for the entire school year. In addition to my regular SENĆOŦEN lessons I am now available for co-teaching opportunities with our classroom teachers, tying in traditional W̱SÁNEĆ knowledge to relevant topics being discussed in our classrooms. I also spend 1.5 days each week traveling around the district to the kindergarten classes and the Children’s Development Centre to teach SENĆOŦEN to some of our Saanich students outside of the ḰELSET community.

Apart from teaching, I enjoy spending my time with my husband, our son, and our pug, Frodo. Much of our free time is spent with family, exploring and appreciating our beautiful homeland here in W̱SÁNEĆ.

ÍY, SȻÁĆEL, my name is Kadie Wozniak and I am one of the English Language Support teachers at ḰELSET Elementary School (along with Melissa Rickson). I moved to the W̱SÁNEĆ territory in 2019 and I am continually reminded of how lucky I am to be raising my three daughters on this beautiful land. I am humbled to learn about its history and I love building relationships with the people I cross paths with. My passion for teaching reading and writing steamed from my years in elementary and middle school. As a youth, I struggled in these areas and I now find great joy in teaching reading and writing to Saanich students. My love for making change has led me to a Masters of Educational Leadership through the Vancouver Island University. I am currently focusing my efforts on supporting literacy in Indigenous youths. Over the past three years, I have worked at ḰELSET Elementary, Keating Elementary, and Sidney Elementary as an English Language Learning and English Language Support teacher. This is my fifth year teaching English. I feel very blessed to be a part of this growing community. When I am not teaching, I am enjoying exploring the peninsula with my partner and our daughters, cooking up a mess, and trying to do a balancing pose in yoga.

Hello KELSET and SD63 families! My name is Jessica Underwood! I am a member of Tsawout First Nation. I am happy to be returning to KELSET elementary school this year, as the Indigenous Education Assistant. I have loved the connections I have made with the students and families this school year and look forward to connecting and meeting more families as the school year moves forward.

ELSET's New Welcoming Pole June 21st 2021

Kathy and Doug Lafortune with Robin Dupree unveiling the New Welcoming Pole.

ELSET Highlights  2020-21

Kindergarten Classes:

The kindergarten students have had such a wonderful time learning about the Saanich Moons  and the pronunciation of each month. They have displayed their artwork each month throughout the class.  Mrs.Dupree taught the students the importance of cedar trees and respecting the land around us in our KELSET forest. Students heard stories, explored artwork and made wonderful connections.

Grade 1 Classes:

Grade 1 classes were able to have a closer look at various artwork made from cedar and natural materials.  A cedar paddle, a cedar bentwood box and various Indigenous made baskets from different parts of BC. The students examined the artwork and shapes and participated in conversations about the importance of plants and nature around us. They also learned various stories about Raven and created some beautiful sketches using the formline designs and shapes.

Grade 2 Classes:

Our Grade two classes spent a lot of time diving into Indigenous stories this year! They learned about the Salmon Ceremony, and learned the importance of oral storytelling. In June, the students learned how to make a clamshell hand rattle!

Grade 3 Classes:

We were very  fortunate  to have our annual KELSET salmon tank on display again . This project allows for students to monitor the tank daily, record their data, and watch salmon eggs hatch and grow into busy Fry. Students celebrated the growth of the salmon by creating beautiful pieces of clay artwork and murals with Indigenous designs.   We later went on a field trip  and walked to  Reay Creek. The students released the salmon into the creek and enjoyed being on the land. We learned the importance of watersheds, and removing invasive plant species. It was a great day for all who attended! The grade 3 classes then learned about the land in which they live. We dove into wool and fibres and the importance of Salish knitting. The children kept their hands busy while learning weaving techniques using wool. What beautiful creations!

Grades 4/ 5 Classes:

The Grade ⅘ classes have had a busy Spring season learning about the Saanich Moons. Each child was able to demonstrate their learning in a Saanich Moon inquiry project.Students created beautiful pieces of artwork, poems, stories, and models of a chosen Saanich Moon. They placed them on display for the entire school to enjoy.

Our KELSET students were very lucky to be a part of a virtual field trip to Barkerville, BC! As students learned about the history of the BC gold rush they were able to learn perspectives from the Secwepmemc Interpreters who broadcasted from Cmetem (Deep Creek) the territory of the Xatsull First Nation.  Many students made connections to their novel study projects from the Literature Circles! This was an excellent opportunity to participate in a virtual field trip!

FORED BC Society held their annual art contest this year. This year’s theme was Traditional Knowledge and Medicine. We had a few students interested in participating this year. Students talked to their families about traditional plant uses, seasonal hunting and gathering  practices and various medicines their family enjoyed. A Big Thank you to all students who submitted their beautiful artwork! The contest winners have yet to be announced. Stay tuned!

Congratulations to all of our students for a successful year! A special congratulations to our Grade 5 students who will be departing for Middle School. I am so honored to have had the privilege to watch each of you grow and learn throughout the years. Warmest congratulations to you all on your grade 5 graduation!  I can not wait to see what adventures you all will take in the future. Be safe, and enjoy a restful summer!

January 2021

Happy 2021!

I would like to recognize all of our students who have persevered and shown great strength of character through these uncertain times. Even though we have found ourselves needing to be flexible during a pandemic, our students and staff have risen to the occasion and a lot of learning opportunities are happening at ELSET Elementary! We have come together, in a supportive community to keep our minds learning and our bodies safe. Lots of wonderful learning opportunities happened before the winter break, we are all looking forward to our upcoming projects!

We would like to give a special thank you to our Indigenous Education Assistant Mr.Landon Underwood. HÍSW̱ḴE Landon for all of your hard work during the fall! Landon built strong relationships with our students. Landon was an integral part of the ELSET team, as he supported our students with literacy in class. He could also be found supporting the children on the playground, often times showing them skills with his lacrosse stick. The children loved his energy and passion!  Landon will be returning back to his post-secondary studies in Florida, we would like to wish him all the best in his academic journey. Please know you are always welcome at ELSET! Thank you again for your dedication to our students!

What’s been happening at ELSET Elementary?

Kindergarten students-

The Kindergarten students have been excited to be learning about the Saanich Moons. They have been learning about the relationship between the moon, the environment and the SÁNEĆ seasonal activities. They have also learned about the importance of paddles and had conversations about the different types of trees we have on the Pacific North West Coast. The children are very fortunate to have a small forest in the backyard of ELSET where they can explore the nature and learn the various uses of plants and trees.  Each student completed their own cardstock paddle to take home to share with their family. They have also practiced coloring in the lines with various Indigenous coloring sheets from Indigenous artists across BC.

Grade1’s

The Grade 1 classes have been busy focusing on learning how to read! Many stories have been shared with the children. Some Indigenous stories have been shared as a read a loud by Mrs.Dupree the Indigenous Support Teacher. Mrs.Thouli’s kindergarten class also discussed the various different types of canoes that are found on the Pacific North West Coast. Mini paddles and Saanich Moon conversations have sparked a real interest with our Grade 1s!

Grade 2’s:

The great 2 classes have been working very hard on their literacy skills. Reading in small groups, and independently, the grade 2 students are learning how to predict, infer and making big connections to their texts. The Christmas Ornaments designed by Butch Dick were a huge hit this year! The students enjoyed making them for their classroom window decorations! Mrs.Underwoods’s class started a salmon unit, where they are learning the importance of keeping our waterways clean, anatomy of salmon, and various different ways to prepare and preserve salmon. They will

Grade 3’s –

We would like to thank Sarah Jim who assisted Justine Shaw’s Grade 3 class in drawing a KELȽOLEMEĆEN  (Killer Whale)  for a bulletin board project. The students just loved it! The students have also been participating on their weekly community walks. They leave bright and early, and hit the pavement to promote good health and fitness, and build up their stamina for the spring when they will embark on a annual walk to LÁU,WELṈEW̱

Grade 4’s and 5’s-

Some of the Grade 4 and 5 classes have completed a lesson learning about the importance of water in Indigenous communities. The class learned about NOKOMIS Josephine Mandamin, an Ojibway grandmother who walked 4,500,000 steps around the Great Lakes to raise awareness about the need for clean drinking water. The students learned the importance of water, as well as the importance of water protectors and how each person has a vital role to play. The grade 4/5 classes have also started to learn how to play “Sla hal / La hal or Bone game”. The students will be teaching their class the Bone Game and making their own sets.

Orange Shirt Day 2020

This year each class had an opportunity to participate in an age appropriate lesson where they learned about Phyllis Webstad, and Orange Shirt Day. Phyllis is a residential school survivor and her story has gained momentum across the country.  Her story continues to help learn about the impacts of residential schools and the intergenerational impacts of the schools. Our school recognizes the importance of reconciliation.  To show our support of Phyllis, ELSET staff and students wore orange shirts proudly with Phyllis. Every Child Matters! Thank you to everyone who wore their orange shirts!

June 2020

Well, another year has passed us by. It has been an extraordinary year! We had a few interesting events this school year. We all learned how to be flexible learners with remote learning. You all did an amazing job! I know it was difficult not being able to see your friends and teachers daily, but remember all the fun things we did get to share together: Halloween pumpkin carving, movie nights, family winter craft night, swim club, annual Terry Fox run, Monday assemblies, and the famous “Kiss The Pig event”.

At this time I’d like to take a moment and say congratulations to our Grade 5 students who will be moving to their new middle school. With this move comes great responsibility. You now are leaving behind the elementary years, and stepping into a wonderful new middle school. I know this is a big move, however, I know you will embark on new adventures, make new friends, join clubs, and grow as a person. I have had the privilege of knowing many of you since your pre-kindergarten days, and it has been a pleasure to watch you play, learn and grow. I am super excited to see what your bright future will bring! Remember, you can be anything you want to be.Always remember where you started. KELSET doors will always be open for you to stop in and visit!

We would also like to acknowledge the parents, guardians, and community, for your continuing support. It has been a great pleasure seeing many of you at our school functions and out in the community. We look forward to seeing you all in September. Have a Happy safe summer !!

When I Was Stuck in a Snowglobe

I was trying to find my good clothes for school. My mom gave me some water, suddenly I started shrinking from the water. I began to reach for the snow globe to bring it to school. It fell on my head and I could not take it off of my head. Next thing I knew I was stuck inside. I started to shiver, it was ICE COLD in here. I s tarted to roll around trying to get the snow globe towards the heater but it didn't work. I decided to look around. I couldn't believe how big it was inside. There were snowmen everywhere. I was really scared because they were all looking at me. I tried again to roll and it actually moved! I rolled under the carpet and the snow globe started to melt. My snow globe melted.

I was so little that time when me and my mom were going on a walk. We found a fun forest and my mom took a picture. I was so bored I sat down and I had so much fun with her that time. I was being funny so I could make my mom laugh and then she framed it. My object is precious to me because it's a picture of me and I love myself. If my precious object was lost I would be so sad I would probably cry a lot. I keep it on the shelf beside my mom's bed. She makes sure it's safe for me. My object is connected to my  mom. It reminds me of a hike we did together. I got it when I was six years old. I love my picture. It is so beautiful, no, gorgeous. THE BEST!

June 2019

Summer is almost here everyone!!

The 2018-19 school year has been such a great year at ḰELSET!

We have had a very busy successful year with a new GaGa Ball court installed, Terry Fox run, Clubs days, Canoe Launch, and Fun lunch.

I would like to raise my hands in thanks to the many families and community members who attended various ḰELSET functions. Plant lessons with JB Williams, Coast Salish knitting with Jen Elliott and May Sam, Mini paddles with Barry Sam, Canoe Project with Curtis Henry,  and “Judy Bit” fry bread bites with Judy Henry, just to name a few! The children are so happy when they see family in their school and our doors are always open for friends and family who would like to share their teachings or have a cup of tea.

This year  I was fortunate to work with some amazing people;  Lola Garcia, Marco Caffiero and Tina Savea in our Indigenous Department. HÍSW̱ḴE for all the work you do with our students. You are appreciated immensely!

This past Spring, ḰELSET students were also fortunate to have Lorelei Mcevey teaching the classes SENĆOŦEN once a week! Many students could be found practicing in the hallways or on the playground. It was heartwarming to watch and know that they are sharing these teachings at home with their families.

As we move into summer months, I would like to congratulate our Grade 5 students as they will embark on new adventures and learning opportunities at the Middle School!

I would like our students to know:

“ There is nothing more rewarding to me than having the opportunity to watch you learn and grow over the past few years. Your futures are bright and amazing!  Have a safe and happy summer!”

February 2019

Greetings from ḰELSET!

This has been a busy successful first term! We were so fortunate to be involved in the  Pulling Together Canoe Project with Pauquachin First Nation ! All 400 ḰELSET students and staff were able to watch the unveiling of the ḰELSET Thunderbird Canoe! We would like to thank Curtis Henry, Chief Rebecca David, SI,OLTENOT , Theresa, Courtney, for their time and dedication towards this project. Every ḰELSET student had an opportunity to participate in land based learning as we carved a  canoe from start to finish. This was such an amazing experience, our students will never forget! HÍSW̱ḴE Pauquachin!

ḰELSET was also very fortunate to have Phyllis Webstad from the Northern Secwpemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation attend for Orange Shirt Day! Phyllis attended a whole school assembly at ḰELSET, where she spoke about the Orange Shirt Day campaign and shared her story with the children.  Later that day, the Grade 4 / 5 classes had a question/ answer period with Phyllis where they could get to know her better. We are so grateful for her visit. We would love to have her come to ḰELSET again. HÍSW̱ḴE Phyllis!

At this time we would like to thank all the parents, and community members for their involvement and participation in ḰELSET activities. Our school loves the family involvement. We would not be able to do some of our activities if it were not for your time and dedication to our school! We invite families to stay connected to our department and feel free to volunteer in your child's class.   HÍSW̱ḴE Families!

-Weekly class walks

-Skating at Panorama

Catching a Fish With Bare Hands By: Peyton S Gr.4

My 16 or 17 yr old cousin caught  two salmon with his hands! They were super wet and slimy, so I barely touched them! My cousin had to grab them through the gills. My sisters, my cousins girlfriend, and her two sisters and cousins were there too! It was super fun because my cousin through a salmon witch would have been the third one but it landed RIGHT in front of us witch scared us! He let it go because he said it “ was too old” . And after a long day, we went home and smoked the salmon. I ate it at school for lunch. It was super delicious. And I like to say “My cousin caught two salmon with his bare hands:”.

Opinion Writing: Should Children Choose their Bed Times?

By: Kalysta C Gr 4

Children should choose their bedtime because I would get smarter, and i am responsible.

I would not be angry if I got more sleep. I would not get in trouble if I choose my bedtime. I would read or do Reflex Math if I went to my bedroom on my own. When I am done, I would go to sleep. Children should choose their bedtime because the would be smarter and I would not be angry if I got more sleep.

Opinion writing: Should Children Choose their Bed Times?

By: Lillian U Gr.4

I know parents should choose their kids bedtime otherwise they’d stay up all night.

Parents have years of experience and know sleep is very important children to growing children. If they do not get enough sleep they could miss the bus and breakfast.  Parents should choose the bed time. When I choose I fall asleep in the middle of the night. When I wake up... I am grumpy and tired!
