How do you know if a book has the right information for you? How do you find information in a book? Use the following tips to find what you are looking for.
Table of Contents
The Table of contents is a list of chapters or sections in a publication. Use it to understand the topics covered in a book.
The Table of contents is usually found at the beginning of the publication.
Index
The Index is a list of names, locations, and topics covered in the publication. It is found at the end of the printed source and is listed in alphabetical order along with the page number(s) that the keyword is referenced in.
Finding publication information: The Title Page
A title page is a page with all the main publishing information of a book or magazine found at the beginning of the publication.
A title page includes such information as:
- Title
- Subtitle
- Authors
- Illustrators (if applicable)
- Publisher
- Place of Publication
- Year of Publication (sometimes)
Finding publication information: The Colophon
A Colophon is a page with all the publishing information of a book or magazine, found either at the beginning (often opposite the title page) or at the end of the publication. In magazines the colophon can often be found on the title page.
A Colophon includes such information as:
- Edition
- Publisher
- Other contributors
- Original Publication information
- Dates of publication
- Version
- Copyright information
