9th Grade comes to the Library every week for their Personal Reading English sessions 🥰
The Library provides a comfy and quiet place for students to concentrate and get into their books!
During the first weeks of March we've held Academic Honesty, Research and Citation Workshops for 9th Grade in collaboration with the English Departament.
The workshop focused on "How to be a good researcher", and dealt with the importance of Academic Integrity in the context of an IB education, the appropriate uses of digital sources and how to select and evaluate the fittest and most reliable sources. We also introduced the 9th Grade students to Referencing and Citation, we explored the different types of sources, and the different ways we can cite a source using the MLA-8 Format, which is the citation format we've adopted in Santiago College.
9th Grade will continue to deepen into these topics throughout the whole year, specially in their Personal Projects

Title: Of Mice and Men
Author: John Steinbeck was a north-american author and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. He's famous for his exploration of the themes of fate and injustice. Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden are others of his most acclaimed work.
Summary: Two itinerant workers, George and Lennie, are on their way to start a new job in a farm in California. George, the smaller man, leads the way and makes the decisions for Lennie, who is bigger and childlike. Lennie LOVES petting soft things, and this is why they haven't been able to keep a job, getting them both in the biggest troubles all the time.
We recommend this novella: Of Mice and Men is a classic in all its glory. It expresses artistic quality; which is conveyed through its performatic like narrative, which makes you think you're almost reading a play, through the particular use of language and imagery and through its direct style. It has an universal appeal: although the events focus on the american society, they also represent pretty clearly the theme of the "American Dream" and the idea that it is possible for anyone to achieve success and improve their lives through hard work. Because of this, it's possible to make connections between the story and the history of human nature, which takes us on a journey of linking Steinbeck's work to other topics and authors. Of Mice and Men has stood the time test with success and still today maintains its relevance, after being published in 1937, teaching us about friendship, dreams, companionship, loneliness and innocence.
Title: The Queen's Gambit
Author: Walter Tevis was an English literature professor whose novels have been the basis of several motion pictures. This novel has been recently adapted to a miniseries.
Summary: 8 year-old Beth finds herself in an orphanage after being in a car accident. There she discovers her talent for chess, her fixation on winning and a particular taste for green pills. Her life changes when she's adopted and is allowed to participate in official chess championships. She'll make her career in a man-dominated circuit, facing her own demons while in pursuit of the world championship title.
We recommend this novel for several reasons: Firstly, have you seen/heard of the series? It's always interesting to get to read a book that's been adapted to a motion picture or a series. Is it loyal to the original work? Secondly, the story: an orphan girl turns out to be a world-class chess player and must battle with her own history and fears in order to make a name for herself, or in Beth's terms, to win. This coming of age novel has not only an exciting story, but also memorable characters and thrilling relationships. Thirdly, the chess universe. Even if you are not familiar with the game, after reading Beth's complex moves you'll be intrigued about this 64 square world that is chess. And lastly, Beth's character, a young woman competing not only with older and more experienced men, but competing with herself, battling with perfection and triumph.
Title: Kpop Confidential
Author: Stephan Lee is a Korean-American who lives in New York and works as a journalist. He enjoys young adult novels and is a Kpop and Kdrama fanatic.
Summary: Candace Park is a young girl from a Korean family who leads a low profile life until she enters an international Kpop competition and must travel to Seoul as a trainee! How will she survive this new adventure? Will her singing abilities (which are REALLY good) be enough to impress her strict supervisors and future fandom?
We recommend this novel not only to our Kpop fans, but to all who are curious of this cultural phenomenon and/or are interested in a good coming of age adventure. Candace will have to face her own insecurities, burst out of the "low-profile" character she has built for herself in America and embrace her musical talent in order to fulfil her dream to be Korean pop star; even when facing her dream occupation, our heroin must make tough decisions, questioning herself and her beliefs. This novel is an interesting gateway to learn about Korean culture and comprehend how and why it's musical scene has taken over the global public.
