This month's Challenge is related to Halloween! But we wanted to create a more specific challenge than just reading a spooky story...
Monsters are present in Literature since we can remember, they are usually represented as ugly characters who portray evil, but there is more to them than that... so this led to a very important question: What makes a monster?
Is it their morals? Their looks? Their behaviour? Are ALL monsters ugly...? Are all monsters EVIL?
These are the type of questions we want our readers to focus on this month. For this, we have selected a variety of titles of many genres and authors that depict different types of monsters or monstruos characters.
Which one will you pick?
September is a memorable month for our National sentiment, that is why in the Library we are celebrating and promoting the reading of national literature, in all levels! We have a wide selection of chilean titles and genres for you to enjoy!
In the Library we have an extensive collection of classic books... some of our books are more than 100 years old! But it's also important that we keep up to date with the latest releases so we are slowly but surely building up a collection that contains newer releases. In order to know what our patrons like best, we challenge you to read a "new book", that is a book that has been published in the last 5 years!
Romance is one of the all time favourite genres in almost all its representations, be that philosophical or artistic, in which a very distinctive type of love -romantic love-, is at the center of the story.
📌Reading Romantic stories can help us deepen our understanding of people, love and relationships in general
📌 They encourage empathy, providing us with insight and lessons on how to better ourselves and our relationships with other people.
📌 Contrary to the popular (and outdated) belief, romance novels are NOT just for girls. Everyone can enjoy them!
📌We learn from the mistakes the characters make in love and their relationships.
📌They can provide us with female insight, which is a point of view that has been made invisible throughout the history of Literature. It is inspiring to read about complex, powerful and interesting female characters, especially if they have been written by women.
📌They spark our imagination and makes us believe in hope and in the better side of a story... and that love is what moves the world!
Reading biographies is a very effective way to see things from a different perspective! Carefully reading about ordinary people doing extraordinary things is an incredible source of inspiration.
Biographies and Memoirs...
📌Can be a very effective tool for the development of abilities and capacities.
📌They teach us valuable life lessons
📌They bring us closer to a historical perspective
📌They broaden our knowledge of general culture
📌They inspire us to understand real success and face failures...
Here are some suggestions...
Drama is a genre of Literature that portrays the representation of some event or conflict through written dialogue and stage action. It is characterized by the absense of a narrator and the focus on the action and the dialogues.
The theater becomes the stage of the drama that will have the performance of the characters, music, decorative elements, etc., which build the atmosphere of space and time given by the dramatic work.
There are different sub-genres of the Dramatic genre: Comedy, Tragedy, Tragicomedy, Farce, Opera, Musical Theatre and many more!
❣️ Reading a play is so fun! They are usually short in lenght, the dialogue is terrific and fun to interpret (specially if your read outloud!), and you can follow the development of the characters through their actions.
Reading Dramatic Plays is a great way to strengthen Literacy: it helps you develop language and communication skills, inspire your imagination and get in touch with our cultural heritage. Here are some suggestions:
A Graphic Novel is a full-length story with comic content represented in an illustrated or graphical style.
A Comic is a narrative medium used to express ideas with images, often combined with text or other visual information. It is usually short lengthed and it's organized by issues and collection of issues.
️A Manga is comic or graphic novel originating from Japan.
Just like traditional novels, graphic novels, comics and mangas have exciting and complex plots, characters, and conflicts... and it's all supported by images, photos or illustrations, which makes the process of reading, decoding and comprehending more interesting and dynamic!
Even if you are a reluctant reader, Graphic Novels, Comics and Manga are particularly captivating, and the combination of text and pictures provides context for stories that you may otherwise not completely understand.
We are progressively expanding our GN and Manga collection in the Library😊 so come and have a look! Here are some suggestions:

Do you judge books just by looking at their covers? 🧐
The phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" means appearances are often misleading, and that you shouldn't judge the worth or value of something or someone by its looks.
Well, this month you'll get the chance to put this (sometimes)nasty habit into practice:
Read a Book with a Blue cover! 📘
🧿 Fun fact: Did you know that blue is one of the most common colours of book covers? There's a whole science behind book cover colors, they sometimes depend on the genre, topics and/or title of the book, but choosing a color also might influence the sales and the way we as an audience perceive a book!
Your librarians have selected an eclectic variety of books that will only have one element in common: the color blue in their cover. The previous Reading Challenges have been gender or topic related. This time the books will be very different from each other. You'll find fiction and non fiction, with and without illustrations; it's the perfect opportunity to pick a book just by glacing at it. 💙
Say CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
but most importantly, have fun!
Halloween is just around the corner!🎃 'Tis the season for spooky reads!
Did you know that "Halloween" means "All Hallows’ Eve", a holiday observed on October 31, the evening before All Saints’ (or All Hallows’) Day. Halloween had its origins in the festival of Samhain among the Celts of ancient Britain and Ireland.
Halloween sets the begining of a new cycle. That date was considered the beginning of the winter period, the date on which the herds were returned from pasture and land tenures were renewed. During the Samhain festival the souls of those who had died were believed to return to visit their homes, and those who had died during the year were believed to journey to the otherworld.
To this day, Halloween continued to be celebrated but mostly as a secular holiday associated with a number of activities: wearing masks and costumes, trick-or-treating, feasts of candy, horror movies and lots of symbols, like the jack-o’-lantern, bats, and black cats.
Today we brought you a couple book recommendations so you can get ready to celebrate halloween 👻
Let us know what you think or if you'd like to recommend a book to us!
New month, NEW CHALLENGE! 📚💕
This month's challenge is: Read a book that was or has been banned in Latin America! 🚫
📍There are many reasons why books have been censored, challenged or banned by institutions and the general public through time, some of them are:
Political or ideological bias, racial issues, encouragement of "damaging" lifestyles, blasphemous dialogue, sexual situations or dialogue, violence or negativity, presence of witchcraft, religious affiliations, age inappropriateness... Etc.
📍We need to remember that book censorship has a lot to do with the values of the time, the place and the different social/political/religious contexts in which these books have been written, published, read and judged. So many books have been banned or censored in one or more of these categories due to a misjudgment or misunderstanding about the books contents and message, or even because of an ideological means of mass manipulation.
📍Although a book may have been banned or labeled a certain way, it is important that the reader makes their own judgements on the book. Reading banned books offers us a chance to celebrate reading. It promotes open access to sharing different perspectives and points of view, critical thinking, reviewing controversial ideas in order to examine our own perspectives, and the exercising of empathy, all of which are key to becoming a lifelong learner.
📍This aligns with the IB mission, which seeks for children to "become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right."
Say CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! But most importantly, have fun!
Happy reading!
This month's challenge is: READ A CLASSIC NOVEL 🖌
You may have heard about “classics” throughout your life, but do you know what a classic really is? Here are some characteristics that a literary work must have in order to be considered in this category.
✏️Expresses an artistic quality:
A classic can be appreciated for its construction and literary beauty, for it is an expression of life, truth and beauty. To be considered a classic, the work must not only tell a story but also convey a literary intention in a higher artistic form.
✏️Has universal appeal:
Literary themes, such as love, hate, death, life, and faith, to name a few, have universal relevance and appeal to different audiences and types of readers.
✏️Makes connections:
A classic is always connected to another classic: a writer's work of art is always informed and inspired by the history of literature, ideas and other authors.
✏️Is relevant to multiple generations:
When a book stands the test of time it speaks not only to the period it was written in but to modern times as well. This means it maintains its relevance throughout time and throughout different generations, “by covering themes universal to the human condition”.
🕰It takes time to become a classic
While there are a lot of books that have these characteristics, not all of them can be considered classics, because not enough time has passed since they were published. A classic book, from our point of view, is a book that has been written at least 60 years ago.

This month's challenge is: BONUS CHALLENGE 🔥
This means that in July you can take up a challenge from the previous months, or, if you are up to day with your Reading Challenge Bingo Card, you can choose from one of these bonus challenges! :
This month's challenge is: READ A DYSTOPIAN/UTOPIAN NOVEL 🔥
A Dystopia shows us a fictional society, often considered the creation of a nightmare world; an imagined universe characterized by an oppressive form of government. It features different kinds of repressive social control systems: it is common to find an absence of individual freedom, warfare and different types of violence.
The opposite of a Dystopia is an Utopia: a perfect and ideal fictional society. It's perfect in its laws, government, and community relations.
Many novels combine Dystopia and Utopia as a metaphor for the different directions humanity can take depending on the choices made, ending up with one of the two possible futures: the nightmare or the dream. Dystopian novels can challenge readers to think differently about current social and political climates, and in some instances can even inspire action!
This month's challenge is: READ AN ADVENTURE BOOK 🔥
A good adventure story has the ability to draw us into a world we might otherwise never explore, we come to care about the characters and the things that are important to them, we visit the places we would normally never choose to go, and sometimes glimpse a little spark of Adventure inside us we didn't know was there!
New month, new challenge! April's reading challenge is... Read a poetry book!
Poetry is the expression of feelings and ideas. It can convey a thought and also describe an adventure through words. A poem can tell a story and even makes us laugh. Poets provoke our imagination; what can compare to that moment when a poem, a verse or even a word strikes a cord within. It stays forever with you!
