Introduction to MLA-8
5th Grade has been learning about citation and proper selection of sources for a few months now. Since the last weeks of August they've had enriching conversations about the importance of citing their sources, and this week they had an introduction to MLA-8, the citation format we've oficially adopted in our school.

Title: The Giver
Author: Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Lois Lowry is an American novelist known for her complex works; some of her novels have been banned while others are considered essential reading in school curriculums (like our school!).
Summary: In a world that seems absolutely perfect, organized and pacific we encounter our main character, Jonas. He is twelve years old and awaiting the nerve wracking Ceremony of Twelve, a moment where all his classmates, and him of course, are assigned their life’s works. In this society everyone has a purpose, an occupation, and Jonas is given the role of Keeper of Memories. He will be responsable bearing the memories of humanity’s history, the good, the bad, the suffering and the joy. Toughest job ever, right?
We wholeheartily recommend Lowry’s novel for this month’s reading challenge. If we are talking about Dystopic novels, The Giver is an excellent example for it englobes the themes, the characters and the general reflective feeling. Jonas lives in a Community that bases it’s functionality on Sameness, the absolute control of individuals and freedom. He is assigned his life work as The Keeper of Memories and discovers that what he considers to be normal is in fact lack of freedom, the eradication of sentimentality, feelings and even color! Being the one in charge of experiencing the history of humanity shows Jonas, and the reader, the importance of feeling and suffering: we discover alongside Jonas that we need empathy, we need connection with others, and that we need memory. In order for men and women to thrive we must not cancel our emotions, but learn from them and express them. Reading this novel in 2021 is an interesting exercise, for in this times of social distancing, we are confronted with the importance of being close to others, not only physically, but emotionally too. Intense? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
Title: Chinese Cinderella: The Secret Story of an Unwanted Daughter.
Author: Adeline Yen Mah was born in Tianjin, China. She is not only an author, but a doctor, too. She has written 7 books including books for young adults and children.
Summary: This book tells the story of an unwanted child, considered to be bad luck after her mother passed away giving birth to her. She is discriminated by her powerful family and must face adversity and disloyalty in her journey to adulthood.
We recommend this autobiographical novel for it's strong message of resistance and self appreciation. It retells the classic of Cinderella in a modern (and very real) tone, where the reader joins the journey of a young girl and the adverities she must face in her life. Her story teaches us about resilience, the ability to raise your head up high with pride after facing (and recovering) from hard times, family disputes and self doubt. Another very interesting thing about this novel is that the foreign reader gets to live and learn about chinese culture and beliefs. This work stimulates the reader with it's strong plot and vivid characters, making it hard not to empathise and think about our own life circumstances.
On April 22 the world joins in to take action for our planet. In the video below, Bill Nye explains what is Climate Change and why is important to make a change in our ways of living.
