ART PORTFOLIO

If you are joining A Level Art or IB Visual Arts we would like to see a selection of your work inspired by the theme and ideas below.

Please keep all the work safe and bring it along when you come into school.

 ‘My World’

Our perceptions around our world as individuals and how we use creativity to process and understand it have taken on a new significance since experiencing restrictions and lockdowns. It has been interesting to see how artists have  used this time to consider how to respond to their surroundings.

The work by the artists below often focus on portraits or locations. These can be self portraits or of other people. Tom Croft offered his talents for free to support key workers. It creates a powerful memory of this time.

David Hockney has been noticing the signs of Spring within the landscape and drawing daily. His images are produced by looking directly at what he sees. He then uses his sensory reaction through his fingers onto paper or ipad via a pencil or stylus, rather than diluting the process by using a photograph to work from.

This summer he has a show at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Take a look at this link to see more of his work.

Extension task - Try completing some drawings in the style of David Hockney yourself.

As well as people and places the artists use objects, possessions, pets and food to represent their daily world and the items most important to them. Their work represents past memories of happier times, a way of coping with the present situation or dreams of a positive future to come.

We would like you to create 4 pieces of work .Overall this should represent around 10 hours of time.

Task 1 - Take a series of photographs that document a typical day for you and arrange them into a composition. This can be all digital or printed out photos arranged and glued together and then this collage photographed.

Task 2 - Choose an image that you liked from your photos in task 1 and create a drawing based on it. Use any of these materials: paint, pastel, pens, pencils, fineliners/ biros, collaged papers, textiles, found materials and anything else you enjoy working with. Consider working on an unusual paper like Mark Powell does. https://www.markpowellartist.com/

Task 3 - Create a non permanent piece of art - the photos you take will be the only evidence that your sculpture ever existed. Take several shots from various angles. It could be using natural materials like pebbles and petals. Look at the work of Andy Goldsworthy for inspiration. https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/andy-goldsworthy-7274. Or it could be using man made objects like the sculptor Tony Cragg https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/tony-cragg-953 Be careful not to choose delicate objects or stack them too high like the glass example below!

Task 4 - The artist Peter Blake took photographs of letters found in many different places to create an alphabet.

Here is an example of his work. For the ‘Q’ he has arranged wooden blocks to make the shape of the letter. You can also move objects into the correct shape for the letter you are trying to make.

Your task is to ‘write’ your name using this technique. Once you have photographed the letters in your name you need to present these as one digital image on a document.

Then, using these photos as inspiration, hand draw your name being as creative as you like with the shapes, patterns & font styles as you want. You may also add background shapes and colours to complete the piece.

Here are some examples of artists working with the inspiration of the world around them.

Notice the theme of dark central circles with radiating colours and textures surrounding them.
