Equation

Definition:

An equation is where two mathematical expressions are equal. Equations help to model real-world situations.

Example

2 = 2

When we say "two mathematical expressions" we're talking about the left side of the equation and the right side of the equation. So saying 2 = 2 is valid.

Example

3x = 6

So when is the left side equal to the right side? When x = 2 since 3 * 2 = 6.

Example

y = 25x + 20

Here's and equation that could model a real world situation. Say that a car rental company loans out a car for $25 per day with an insurance fee of $20. We can write this situation as the equation above.
