Throughout the production stage me the prop artist must first break down the parts the asset is made of e.g. this pocket pistol is made up of 6 deferent parts as some of the part would be animated such as the trigger. Once I planned out the different parts I then start modelling each of the parts with image reference.
After the modelling stage the next task is to make sure the texture displays on the model properly. This stage is called UV unwrapping and the simplest way to explain UV unwrapping is it is sort of like reverse engineering origami. Once the UV is done I then export the UV map and model out, and with the UV map create an ID map by painting colour onto the UV islands in Photoshop.
Last but most fun, is the texturing stage where I get to apply certain materials onto different parts of the model. I use the id map to speed up this process as I plan to spend more time polishing the model up with extra detail. Once the texturing is done I then export the textures out and send to Courtney who implements them onto the scene. If the asset has a problem though I would fix the issue and resend it back.

About: My name is Elias Holthouse, I am a 3D Prop Artist as I have always been fascinated by the details of real life assets. I tend to prefer to make my assets look more stylized however I don't mind making my assets look more realistic.
I have always been inspired by video games such as Sea of Thieves, Borderlands 3, and Elden Ring as their game feels like your there which I want to achieve the same effect with my models.
