My Name is Declan, I'm a Current Student at SAE. I'm Currently in my 5th Trimester, Studying for my Bachelor's of Graphic Design. I've arrived back at my studies after a year break working in the design and print industry. My Hobbies include gaming, Designing and Drawing in my spare time.
My design inspirations for entering the course stem from my enjoyment from creating films as an art director and production designer and aimlessly scrolling through Instagram with all of the inspiration that we see around. Toy Creation is something that would be cool to pursue although I've never done anything like that before.
The Brief was simple, Create something to 'Express Yourself'. To produce a body of work that represents something that inspires you, or in this case something that allows me to express myself. Reflecting on my time at SAE, revisiting my Studio 2 Project, the magazine 'Lore Ipsum' focused on typography and lead me towards artists such as Otl Aicher and the use of Helvetica. What if Helvetica was a person? The foundation from this magazine is what's helping me hone in towards the style that I am developing alongside this Collection. Black and White, Little Colour. Lineography and Simplism Inspired by modern-day Signage.
The concept was to map out a personal daily routine. Transperth Trains are seen by everyone and are the staple of transport in Perth. This is for our everyday workers, the 9-5's, the students, and the community. This is a Reminder to look outside sometimes and embrace our local landmarks and sceneries that may not be seen as much. This Collection of Posters was made not just for one person, but for the collective of Perth. The story of our Public Transport and the towns south of the river are that of familiarity. The Daily Departure Collection was made to show a sense of familiarity alongside some noticeable landmarks such as Perth Station, The Cactus, and the Community Face in Cockburn Central.
The Largest inspiration comes from Swiss Design, a minimalistic design thats content is as minuscule as possible to suppress the designer's subjectivity; Also using a grid format. This was a large part of my inspiration with one man above the rest who stood out, Specifically Otl Aicher. Otto Aicher was born on the 13th of May in Ulm. Widely renowned as the father of the Geometric Man. he set new standards in the fields of design and graphic design. He created corporate identities for the companies Braun and Deutsche Lufthansa, the West German airline. In 1968 he became responsible for designing the Munich Olympic Games. His pictograms became an international system of symbols rapidly and are now world-renowned and applied to evervday symbols. He also created the typeface Rotis.
I see swiss typography as a math equation. That the real challenge of creating a good swiss design is to not think about how to use the space, but how not to use them. Swiss typography is elegant yet jarring to the eyes, makes you understand the message easily, and is easy to look at.
I had to put my ideas down onto paper. I had some idea sketches and just went along with it and through the process of starting off really rough and trying to refine it as much as possible in short amount of time worked. As you can see I have both a first and starting of a second poster, my project documentation to go alongside this new concept, as well as a sketch of a train and an animation test.
