Choosing the musician or band to do the album cover for was a bit of a different process than my peers, becuase i used a comission for this project. Previously in the second trimester I was approached by a music student who also attends SAE who asked me if I was able to create an album cover for them. After running it past the
This is the moodboard that I ended up with at the end of the project. I used different perspectives and ideas from each of the se designs even when I changed my design halfway through.
These first ideations were completed when I first recieved the comission, the whole project had a very loose brief, the two main components that needed to be included in the final project was mountains and crystals.
The client had given me some demos to listen to after I asked for them since knowing what the songs will sound like could help me determine the style of the illustrations and the colour palette. This ideation was the final thumbnail that I had created and after sending them all to the client this was also the one he liked the most.
these were pictures off Pinterest becuase i needed to do a mountain and cloud study, this was becuase I was still a bit new to the whole Digital art thing and needed help getting the linework down.
The top ideation was just exploration on how to draw mountians and add depth to the illustration in a simple way.
I did some research on psychedelic art and colours on pinterest, after creating a board I imported some pictures into procreate to extract the colour theme from them. One of the most common features in the art pieces from my research was fine lines flat colours, gradients and a grainy overlay to give the design a more vintage and retro look. The style also fit perfectly with the music that was for the album, usually psychedelic art makes no sense or has a very dream like quality to it.
The First ideation on the left was done digitally and kept inline with the brief that I had constructed for myself. I was however stuck on this design for a while, it was not working with the composition and something felt off about the whole layout.
After a zoom class with Ange (one of my lecturers) I tried using a scene from the Pocohontas movie to help with the layout, the second ideation is a result of 40 minutes of sketching. The portal was changed to an eye after overhearing a conversation and someone mentioning how eyes kept popping up in their dreams.
Something still felt off so I decided to try and go with my original design. To stay with the origianal coloured in hand sketch i decided to completely redo the path and found that the reason why I was thrown off the design so much was due to the fact that the path was not correctly proportionaed to the design, it was to intricate and to windy (for lack of a better word).
These two ideations were halfway through the process and fit the psychedelic style a lot more than the rest of my previous designs. The minial way of detailing simple designs wen with the illustrative style. Transforming the road into a water way for boats also added to the nonsensical nature of the design giving it a more dream like feel.
