This project was based on the Three Views of a Shoe drawing. The first part of the project was to draw a section of shoe zoomed in three times in each of the three sections. After completing the Three Views of a Shoe, I took a viewfinder and to focus on the most interesting part of the shoe. The next drawing was a zoomed in drawing of the previous zoomed in drawing, and the last one a zoomed in drawing of the zoomed in drawing of the previous zoomed in drawing. The second part of the project was to choose one of the most interesting zoomed in drawings and enlarge it on a piece of drawing paper. This was to be an abstract drawing utilizing the lines of the shoe. Both projects were drawn on 21x12 in drawing paper. The first project was drawn entirely in graphite. The second project was also drawn in graphite but then outlined in sharpie and colored using colored pencils.
The first project drawings utilized the value strip. They were drawn using a mechanical pencil, which has a 2 HB hardness, to sketch out the lines of my object. To create depth in the drawing, I valued the "closer" lines in darker graphite, either pushing harder on the pencil or using a 4 B or 6 B pencil and valued the farther lines in lighter graphite by using a B or 2B pencil. The second project was also sketched out using a mechanical pencil. The shoe lines were then drawn over in black Sharpie and the pictures were drawn over in fine point black and blue Sharpie. I also used a gear stencil to draw the gears and then colored in the pictures in colored pencil. Lastly, I used the fine point Sharpie to draw lines to fill the spaces between the gears.
Going with the theme of "zooming in," my second project was base on having to take a closer look in between the lines. When you initially look at the drawing you can see how pretty it is and colorful and stuff, but when you take a closer look you can see that behind the scenes there are gears hidden beneath them. I filled the spaces between the gears with lines to make them even harder to see. I kind of based this idea on how media likes to report on the bad things in the world and the terror and not show the good things. This drawing was based on the opposite effect of that. If I were to do this again, I would like to darken the color of the continent in the world drawing and define the lines in the ocean/beach drawing. I would have also liked to outline the border in Sharpie.
