Inspired Art History

Artist Statement

This is my inspired piece of artwork. It was assigned to us for are midterm. We were asked to chose from a list of people we had to research for are midterm and then create something inspired by them. This was inspired by Kara Walker. She is a colored woman that makes black cutouts (silhouettes) and hangs them up in walls, creating the artwork live in the gallery. Now this piece is special to me, I was always aware of what was going on in the world but I feel my expression of that in my art was never very alive or well represented. After I made this piece I realized most pieces after this had a twist to it and I was reaching for those ideas that meant something not only to me but represented the world we are living in. I used to just draw heels and silly things like that, but after this piece I felt more connected to the real world through my paintings/drawings because I was better representing these issues in our world. The composition of this I find interesting because most of the page is taken up by black silhouettes as well as the little people at the bottom add that engaging twist of wonder. For this artwork I used watercolor pencil, black construction paper, and glue. At first I was going to have only on silhouette and the rainbow with one small figure at the bottom, but my ideas evolved into this. Two silhouettes facing one another looking into eachothers eyes most likely resulting in a kiss with the small group of people in the bottom left corner judging them for wanting to be who they are and love who they want.
