Coil and Cave

Artist Statement

For this assignment we were tasked to create a straight cylinder. Clearly my pot is a little misshaped and it is something I need to work on in the future. To create this I took a slab for my base and then rolled clay for the body of the pot. I coiled the clay straight up. Then I needed to add a design. I didn't want to simply pant on it or carve something into the clay. Instead I completely removed sections of the clay. I plan to put tea light inside. With these holes and light will shine out creating a beautiful look. If I were to do this again I would be carful when talking parts of the clay out because that resulted in my pot not being straight. Also I should have made the very small holes bigger. When the pot went in the kiln as all pots it shrunk a little. This was not a huge problem at the time, however, when glazed and after being fired the holes had completely been sealed shut. No light was able to be released from these holes. Therefore, next time they need to be bigger.
