Zoomed Shoe

Artist Statement

This piece is the result of us zooming in on one part of a shoe, making it closer and closer each time we zoomed. I chose the eyelet of a shoe, and the lace coming out of it. I made it by first sketching, then going in and drawing out all the squiggles and triangles, trying to show movement. I then went and watercolored it. I chose to make it like this because as soon as the project as introduced, I saw an image of the bright orange tendrils moving across the page like this, and i knew that was what I wanted to do.

I used color, shape, and texture here. Color; I used complementary colors in each different part of the piece to further the difference. Shape; I used the combination of sharp, jagged triangles, ad soft, flowing squiggles to draw attention and create further contrast.

This doesn't tell a story so much as it draws the eye along this strange environment I created. It relates to my life because it is the eyelet off of my shoe, which I zoomed in on. It is one of my favorite pairs of shoes, and I used it as a reference. I think I could have made it stronger by adding more around the edges instead of just black and also by adding more tendrils to the flowing part to bulk it out more.
