Artist Statement

The subjects of my creations are myself (the self portrait), a pickle jar (the interesting object), and my perspective on the bus (perspective drawing). I used graphite on each of the drawings. None of them really made it out of the sketching phase, and honestly, I'm not that proud of them and wish I had put in a little more effort. I chose to do the self portrait because it was part of the assignment, but I decided to do it at a three-quarter angle to mix it up. It didn't go quite to plan, but I had never really done anything at that angle before, so for a fist time, I feel like stuff is pretty in proportion.

Of the composition rules, I used lots of shape, line, and value. For both shape and line, it is kind of obvious where those come in, as it is hard to create a piece where there is no shape or line. These com in in the whole outlines of everything and in the way I shaped things in the pieces. The value shows up in the shading, which I didn't do very much of, but mostly because I was pressed for time. I did do a bit though i the hair of the self portrait as well as around the pickles in the jar.

The story's behind the pieces are that they portray perspectives that one doesn't typically chose to portray. Most students chose to do their perspective drawings in a hallway or classroom, whereas I did mine on the bus. My project relates to my life in that I took little pieces of my life and put them on paper. I think it could be stronger if I were to spend more time on each of them. They just took a bit unfinished at the moment, and I would maybe go over them in pen or just add more shading or something along those lines.
