Artist Statement
The subject of my creation is a female-looking creature standing mournfully in the wind while screaming. I used the ink blots in the piece as the eyes of the creatures, and I really like how it turned out. Too create the piece, I first sketched the piece in pencil, then used my fine liners to do the line work. Next I look my grey Copic Marker to shade in some places. Then I took some water color and did the background. I drew inspiration partly from the style of an artist I found on Instagram named Nate Hillyer. I really admire his style, and thought this piece would be a good opportunity to incorporate some of his style into mine. I placed the character off center on the page because thats where the inkblots were located, so I used the hair to sort of balance the piece out.
I used shape, line, and color mainly in this piece. I used shape to show the movement of the hair in the invisible wind, line shows up in the outlining of the forms in the piece, and color is very important, from how I chose to keep the figure color-free, but violently colored the background one harsh, angry color. I changed my plans for the background towards the end of the piece. At first I had no idea what I wanted to do with it, but I finally decided to show more emotion and add a bright color to the background, swirling around the troubled figure in the middle.
The meaning behind the piece was just me attempting to show some emotion through an artwork. I usually don't like to show much feeling through a piece and prefer to keep it more technical, but here I was trying to show pain on this "woman's" face. This relates to my life because it sort of shows how I feel at times, when the world throws a lot at me, and I try to fight and continue going, but I usually find myself screaming for a break into and empty void of color. I just made all of that up now, but it fits pretty well, doesn't it? I think an art piece can be anything you want it to be, and right now I want this piece to mean that to me.
