Time Capsules Foundations

The assignments for these projects were to draw your hand holding something, a corner of a room, a self portrait using a mirror, and an interesting object. The required media was graphite on 8 1/2 x 11" paper.

For each piece I used similar technique. I first drew a light outline of the major objects and once I was satisfied with those I erased and went over the lines making them darker. Then I went through the same process with the less prominent parts of the piece. At this point I shaded everything, adding depth and shadows if needed.

For the hand drawing, I chose a paintbrush to hold because i didn't necessarily have to have it with me, I could replace it with a pencil and work with that if I needed to. I didn't use a pencil in the actual piece only because a paintbrush was more interesting to draw. This hand position also showed all my finger and wrinkles which made it challenging and more interesting which was good. In the drawing of the corner of the room, I chose that corner because the different views of space it gave made it challenging. For instance the next room and the view out the window. In my self portrait I considered making a facial expression to add feeling to the piece. However, I decided against it because it would have been unnecessarily difficult to look back and forth from the mirror and complete drawing while holding a certain face the whole time. Finally I chose an old microscope for my interesting object because of all the curvature and circles in the structure and dials.
