Abstract Shoe Drawing

The assignment was to first draw a shoe from three different views (side, front and bird's-eye) in line contour, using different weight lines and no shading. I then blew up a section (still using line contour) that I thought had interesting lines on another piece of paper using a view-finder. I then used the view-finder on that drawing to blow up a section of it and then did it again on the next one. At this point I chose my favorite of the three blown up line contour drawings and further enlarged it on a third piece of paper, using black permanent marker for the lines. At this point I was assigned to create an abstract piece using these lines.

My initial imspiration for this piece came from the stitches in the shoe. I thought that the stitches of the blown up shoe looked like the center lines of a road—shown on the bottom—and so I tuned it and the laces into roads. However, this idea wasn't lending itself to a very wide variety of color, so I added a vanishing point and a sunset in the top right corner where I had extra space. This not only added color but also added a second perspective which makes it more interesting.
