Beautiful Oops Foundations

For this assignment, each student was given a sheet of paper with random ink splotches on it. Using this we were supposed to create a piece of art using the splattered ink in any way we wanted.

I chose basic graphite for my media, if only for convenience. I first outlined the large fish and then drew in all the scales. I then drew the school of smaller fish, and lastly I outlined and shaded the features of the background, like rocks and kelp.

My initial inspiration for this piece came from the larger ink splotch. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was the gill or flipper of a fish. But then there was the second ink splotch. It was a little bit of a stretch but it almost looked like a fish so, because of the position of the larger fish's flipper, I slightly modified the second ink splotch and then made a school of other similar fish around it. Because I wanted the fish to be the focal point of the piece, I made the background somewhat drab and used shading to distinguish between rocks.
