My overall experience in 3D design was disheartening. Some of this probably stemmed from the high quality of three-dimensional work that I have been exposed to in the art world. I think that my visions for projects were probably too ambitious and detail oriented and I held my work to standards that I couldn’t meet because of my lack of experience. This resulted in dissatisfaction with the majority of my work for this class. I struggled specifically with creating the level of detail that I wanted, especially in using somewhat limited resources. I also found that the concept of creating a “full” three-dimensional piece is a learning curve. I have mainly been exposed to two-dimensional art, only one side of which requires work and attention. In 3D however, all sides of the piece have to be attended to so that they do something for the piece. Although I struggled a lot with this class there were processes which I enjoyed and products that I’m proud of. The process I most enjoyed was sculpting. I liked making the miniatures for the look inside project and also enjoyed the sculpting for the ceramic bust project. The piece that I am most proud of is the three-dimensional representation of the Maine license plate, which I created for the Mainer project. I really like the concept, I put a lot of work into the project and I think it was one of the best final outcomes.

I have learned and improved throughout the duration of this class. I think it is apparent, as one looks through my portfolio, that my attention to detail increased from the first project to the last and I became more creative with my materials as the semester progressed; my later pieces use more mixed materials than the earlier ones. I also learned new techniques such as editing high contrast reference images, building armatures and how to make a bust. Overall, this class gave me insight into the uses for different materials in art and further opened my mind to the concept of mixed media.

Art relates to my life in that it is a means for me to express my views and beliefs in a creative way. Sometimes the process of expression through art can be difficult, but it’s satisfying to create a piece that means something to me. For this reason I found myself repeating themes in my artwork. The environment is a theme that appears in a lot of my art (two and three-dimensional) because is it something that I care about and something that impacts me. My pieces from the hands project, the look inside project, and the mini concentration all show perspectives on nature and the environment. As far as materials, I found myself often using wire in my pieces. This material was introduced to me last year and it was one of my favorites to work with. I used it at the beginning of the semester in the portrait relief project and I also used it in pieces near the end of the semester such as the Mainer project, the ceramic bust project, and the mini concentration.
