This is a drawing that I did that was inspired by some of the works and styles of Jaune Quick-To-See Smith. As the center of the piece I used the outline of a buffalo skull. Jaune Quick-To-See Smith Is Native American and often creates pieces related to this heritage. The buffalo herds used to be very important to the Native Americans, they relied heavily on the buffalo for food and skins. So I used this significant Native American symbol for my piece and put designs and symbols on it as they sometimes would with buffalo skulls. These symbols and the writing I used outside the skull are reflections of one of Jaune Quick-To-See Smith's unique styles which is to use words and writing in her pieces. Around the skull I drew some elements of our modern day culture that might affect or have affected (negatively for the most part) the culture of the Native Americans. Jaune Quick-To-See Smith often incorporates these two culture and their interactions in her work, so I tried to mimic that. The large bird-like symbol in the middle of the skull is significant because it represents strength. Then surrounding this is a variety of modern day element s that might test this strength, trains, cars, cities, etc. this piece is representational of Native American cultures remaining strong while being surrounded by threats and difficulties coming in from outside, the interaction between the two cultures.
