Teacher Scenario - Math

Teacher Information

  • 5th year teacher

  • Subject: Math

  • Post Covid teaching has stressed you and created anxiety in delivering high quality lessons to students who are struggling more and lacking basic proficiencies.

Class Information

  • 5 EC students

  • 2 EL students

  • Total number of students = 25

  • Based on the most recent standard taught (addressing summarizing and finding the main idea), 15/25 demonstrated mastery. 5 were within 5 points of mastery. The final 5 were 10-15 points away from mastery.

  • Elementary: (3rd Grade): Multiply and divide within 100.

    • NC.3.OA.7: Demonstrate fluency with multiplication and division with factors, quotients and divisors up to and including 10.

    • Know from memory all products with factors up to and including 10.

    • Illustrate and explain using the relationship between multiplication and division.

    • Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers.

  • Middle School: (6th Grade): Reason about and solve one-variable equations.

    • NC.6.EE.7: Solve real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations of the form:

      • x+p=q in which p,q, and x are all nonnegative rational numbers; and

      • p.x=q for cases in which p,q, and x are all nonnegative rational numbers.

  • High School: (Math I): Interpreting Categorical and Quantitative Data.

    • NC.M1.S-ID.6: Represent data on two quantitative variables on a scatter plot, and describe how the variables are related.

    • NC.M1.S-ID.6a: Fit a least square regression line to linear data technology. Use the fitted function to solve the problems.

    • NC.M1.S-ID.6b: Assess the fit of a linear function by analyzing residuals.

    • NC.M1.S-ID.6c: Fit a function to exponential data using technology. Use the fitted function to solve problems.

Respond to the following challenge and reflective questions on slides 16-17 of your Passport Book!

Challenge 1: Create a GRASPS activity using the skills you have learned for designing curricular units of study.

Challenge 2: What high-yield strategies will you utilize to get 80% of the class to mastery level on summarizing and finding the main idea? (80% is 20 students).
