The Arts has two broad areas:
The Visual Arts
(Arts and Ceramics - coded as AV )
The Performing Arts
(Music, Dance and Drama - coded as AP )
Years 7 & 8 students will explore various ways in which to create and present works of art. Students will be asked to draw upon their imagination as well as observations and experiences of the real world; these will form the starting points for creative solutions to tasks.
Students will also undertake applied learning in terms of techniques, methods and processes, in order to develop effective foundation skills for further studies.
At the Year 7 and Year 8 level, a broad range of subjects are offered enabling students to gain more specialised experiences in a number of areas.
• In Year 7 all students must complete a Unit in AV01 - ART BASICS (CORE UNIT)
• Students can select an additional units. A visual or a Performing Arts subject.
AV 01 Junior Core Art
This basic unit in Art will give you a head start in the ways of Art. You will learn how to draw, paint, sculpt, print and use art materials to create your own wonderful images and creations. This will be your chance to develop your imagination, learn to tap into your creativity and have fun as you learn.
You will also learn about the history of art and investigate some of our greatest artworks to discover what mysteries they hold.
Students will need to provide basic materials: Grey-lead pencils, an eraser, ruler, and a set of quality coloured pencils.
AV 02 Junior Art Elective 1
Make your mark ! Do you want to express yourself? In this unit you will discover your hidden talent in the visual arts. Develop more in-depth skills and further explore drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and collage. You will create a range of artworks based on both imagination and observation. You will also discover the world of art and artists.
Students will need to provide basic materials: Grey-lead pencils, an eraser, ruler, and a set of quality coloured pencils
AV 03 Junior Ceramics
Have you got a creative urge? Would you like to work with clay? Use your hands to make things, or to transform a piece of clay into a work of art? This unit is an introduction to the various skills and techniques needed to create many wonderful projects.
Students will experience and learn how to:
• Coil, pinch and slab build
• Paint and decorate
• Use and understand glazes
• Use equipment like the slab roller
• Design and construct
Topics will include making vases, sculpture, tiles, and models. For most of the time this unit is “hands on” - with some theory covering clay and firing processes. Students will need to provide a sketchbook, grey-lead pencil and an apron.
AP 03 Drama
This drama course is not just about acting. Prepare yourself for performing with games and activities. Create characters and write scripts. Explore the world of theatre and performance. Discover what makes a performance convincing and atmospheric.
Unleash your comic genius! Learn about the different types of comedy. Learn more about your favourite actor and what makes them so talented! Discover the importance of music, sounds, costumes and props.
AP 04 Music Performance
Do you dream of slinging a guitar over your shoulder and taking to the stage?
This subject will help you to develop the fundamentals and set you on a pathway to success. Learning will involve listening and music theory where you will develop an appreciation of a range of genres and the expressive elements musicians employ.
Furthermore, you will have opportunities to learn songs, develop skills with various instruments and collaboratively rehearse and play in a band.
AP 01 Music
In this subject students will learn the fundamentals of Music performance. Students will engage in listening to develop an awareness of a range of musical genres and learn about song structure and the elements of music. Students will also learn instrumental skills and will form ensembles to perform songs to an audience.
