Understand the world by gaining scientific knowledge and skills in the areas of the chemical, biological and physical sciences.
Students will explore scientific principles through a series of portfolio tasks, where they will apply their knowledge, evaluate theories and report findings in a scientific manner.
• Prepare yourself for the many careers that rely on scientific skills and knowledge
• Develop skills in observing, recording, explaining, problem solving and communicating with others.
SC 01 YEAR 7 Science I
Prepare yourself for fun as you get into science, find out what scientists actually do, and how they work to solve real-life problems. Find out how science has shaped our view of the world, and has helped us understand why things happen. Learn what is really in water, how to get it out, and how we can help people worldwide have access to clean water.
You will learn how to collect and analyse data, formulate a hypothesis and carry out a scientific investigations. You will learn that all livings things are organised into a classification system based on similarities and differences in particular features. Through investigation you will be able to classify different types of mixtures and also learn a variety of techniques to separate mixtures into their constituent parts.
SC 02 YEAR 7 Science II
Get deeper into science as you start to communicate your laboratory findings to other scientists. Discover the mysteries of the sky. How big is the universe? Why do we have different seasons, and why are they different to what America experiences? What is the best machine to use for the job? Evaluate the effectiveness of tools and design your own machine. You will study how forces interact in the world around us and how simple machines can be used to alter the amount of force needed to complete a task. You will investigate how the Earth, Moon and Sun are responsible for predictable and periodic phenomena such as the seasons, tides, phases of the moon and eclipses.
SC 03 YEAR 8 - Science I
Have you ever wondered how they put the bubbles in a soft drink? Do you know that chemical reactions take place everywhere – in a space shuttle’s engines, sunken wrecks at the bottom of the ocean and in your body to keep you alive. Find out why you get hot when you run?
You will investigate how different forms of energy can be transformed or transferred between objects. You will understand how the properties of the different states of matter relate to the motion and arrangement of particles in a substance. Through investigation you will be able to identify the evidence for a chemical change.
SC 04 YEAR 8 - Science II
Ever wondered how do the different cells in our bodies keep us alive, and why are stem cells so controversial? Take a deeper look into the systems in your body, and find out how blood keeps us alive and what happens to food as it travels through your digestive system. Do you know how electricity work? What is lightning? Have you wondered how rocks are made?
You will learn that multicellular organisms coordinate their functions using specialised tissues and organ systems and also understand that organs within a multicellular organisms work in conjunction to keep an organism alive. You will learn to explain the rock cycle, including the formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock. You will also explore the timescale on which geological processes occur. You will build an electrical circuit and learn why electricity is so dangerous to humans.
