Humanities programmes provide the knowledge, skills and values for you to participate as an active and informed citizen of the global community. Students learn about human progress since the Industrial Revolution, how people have organised themselves into societies and how they have interacted with their physical environments.
HUM 09 Year 9 Humanities
In Year 9, students study Humanities in their core classes, covering 2 units each of History and Geography, and one each of Business and Economics and Civics and Citizenship.
In History, students examine the Industrial Revolution and the impact this made on people’s living and working conditions. They seek to understand the devastating consequences on Australia’s Indigenous people at the time of British settlement of Australia.
In Geography, students study biomes across the world and how humans alter their environment to use land for food and other resources. Students examine food security across the world and recognise the impact and dependence humans have on environments.
In Economics and Business, students investigate the interconnections that Australia has with the world through trade, production and consumption of goods and travel.
In Civics and Citizenship, students study how political parties form when groups of people begin to demand changes in their society. Students explore a variety of political issues and consider the way they can actively participate in political and social life to create social change
Electives
HIS 09 The Great War 1914-1918
In 1914 the world experienced the start of 4 years of conflict on a scale never seen before: World War One. In this unit students will investigate key aspects of World War 1 and the experience of war, including the nature of this particular war, how it was different from those that preceded it and how it changed the society that evolved afterwards.
In this unit students will examine:
• The causes of the war and how partnerships developed between countries
• The reasons why men enlisted, where they fought and the nature of warfare
• Propaganda, conscription and the contribution of, and impacts on, the civilian population
• The changing role of women and their contribution to the war effort
• The experience of war in other countries including Turkey, Germany and France
• How WW1 formed part of the Australian story; the legend of ANZAC and debates about the significance.
This unit offers the opportunity to examine a single aspect of history in detail. It is important for the on-going study of History in Year 10 and provides valuable contexts for studies in VCE Revolutions, Sociology and 20th Century Politics because the consequences of the war are still felt in global relations and politics to this day.

GEO09 Geography Fieldwork
Get ready to explore the world around you! This hands-on geography elective lets students step outside the classroom and into real-world investigations. Through excursions and fieldwork, students will dive into the local community, comparing it with
different suburbs and towns across Melbourne. Students will explore how people impact the environment, look at how communities tackle environmental change, and understand how migration shapes our city. Students will learn how we use data to improve lives, wellbeing and communities. Students will gain new skills in problem-solving and critical thinking while making real-world discoveries!
Due to the fieldwork component which involves high-levels of self-regulation, this course has a pre-requisite minimum GPA of 3.7. There will be additional costs due to the additional fieldwork to be completed.
