Understand the world by gaining scientific knowledge and skills in the area of chemical, biological and the physical sciences. Develop skills in communication, observation and experimenting as you discover how science can help the world become a better place for everyone.
Students will explore scientific principles through a series of portfolio tasks, where they will apply their knowledge, evaluate theories & report findings in a scientific manner.
SC 21 Year 9 Science
Get ready to dig deeper into scientific knowledge and prepare yourself for a future science career as you explore the different branches of science. Have you wondered what causes iron to rust? Do you know how vaccines work and why we can’t see clearly underwater?
In Chemistry you will learn about atomic theory, the Periodic Table and different chemical reactions. In Biology you will investigate different systems in your body, and discover how your genes and lifestyle choices can cause problems in these systems. In Physics discover how we see and hear. Why are there only seven colours in a rainbow, and discover if dogs really colour blind?
Pathway to VCE Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
SC 23 Forensic Science
Do you like CSI or Criminal Minds? Forensics is a high interest subject. Want to learn how the ‘forensic process’ takes place, and how police officers catch the criminals no matter how hard they try to cover up their crimes?
In this unit you will develop knowledge about examining and protecting the crime scene, collecting evidence, as well as understand the forensic technique used by forensic scientists. Are eyewitness testimonies as good as they seem? What makes someone a psychopath? You will carry out fingerprint identification and chemistry mysteries, and interpret data to catch the perp!
In this unit you will find out how Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology come together in the real world. Although the context of this unit is forensic-based, you would realise the procedures and techniques are applicable to a wide range of disciplines and careers.
This unit is a pathway to VCE Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology
SC22 Psychology Yr 9
How do scientists study humans? This subject is an introduction to Psychology! Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behaviour.
How do we, as humans, affect the behaviour of others? People think, feel, act and react to each other every day and this can be used to influence and bring change to individuals and wider groups. We can develop skills of forming and testing hypotheses (problem-solving), collecting and analysing psychological data, and communicating findings.
We will study:
• Personality – What makes us who we are? What are our strengths?
• Social cognition – Why do we have attitudes? What influences us to behave in different ways?
• Mental health – How can we look after ourselves and be the best person we can be?!
Learn about these interesting topics while applying your key science skills!
Pathway for VCE Psychology
SC24 Physics
Have you ever wondered why Earth or the Moon don’t just spin off into space? Why we see changing amounts of the Moon in the night sky? What causes day and night and seasons?
In this unit, you will learn about our solar system, with a focus on the relationship between the sun, Earth and the moon. You will model the orbital and rotational movement of planets in our solar system and investigate how this movement of the Earth and the moon defines our years, seasons, days and nights.
Students use stopmotion animation to demonstrate their understanding of the movement of the sun, Earth and the moon.
