English teaches you how to read and view texts and communicate effectively and creatively. In English you will:
• Read for enjoyment and understanding in class and at home
• Assemble a writing folio of pieces written for a variety of purposes, audiences and contexts, and carefully edit your work
• Speak effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences by taking part in talks, debates, discussions, dramatisations and role plays
• Think critically
• Listen with comprehension
• Respond to and distinguish between literature and other forms of writing or speech
• Evaluate ways that others try to influence you
• Understand the structures and features of language
• Use technology to enhance learning and communication
In English in Year 7 and 8 you will improve your reading by spending a period each week in the Reading Room in the Library, where you will read independently, in small groups and with teachers.
Creating, writing, speaking and producing texts
In English you will also become a writer of many different types of texts including:
• Imaginative texts, such as narratives, poems, songs, comic strips, and video clips.
• Informative and persuasive types of texts, such as reports, reviews, discussions, speeches, procedures and essays.
In English in Year 7 you will become a writer by being involved in the Writer’s Notebook Project. You will receive your own Writer’s Notebook, and have the opportunity to decorate it, to show off your personality and your unique writing style.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) in Year 7 and 8 (EAL01, EAL02, EAL03, and EAL04)
English as an Additional Language (EAL) is for students who have lived in an English-speaking country for five years or less. In year 7 and 8 you will gradually build your English vocabulary and grammar so you can successfully complete your studies. Texts are carefully chosen to suit your needs and groups are smaller than other classes so there is an opportunity for all students to receive a lot of support from the teacher.

Over each Semester in both Year 7 and 8 you will create a Portfolio of work, demonstrating your skills in writing, listening, speaking and reading. Each piece you create in the Portfolio will be for a different audience and purpose.
Reading, viewing and engaging with texts
In English you will engage with a variety of texts for enjoyment. You have the opportunity to listen to, read, view, interpret, and perform a range of texts.
These include:
• Spoken texts, such as speeches, podcasts, video clips, poems and songs.
• Written and visual texts such as including news papers, magazines and digital texts, novels, short stories, non-fiction, poetry, dramatic performances and films.
