This is an incredibly rich subject for historical study. There are several key books that are mentioned in the Debating the Past section from the Brinkley textbook. In addition, there are some wonderful resources on the web that further explores this topic. A few are listed below (list is a work in progress)

• Digital History's website has a great set of supplements to further explore issues relating to American Slavery including slave culture
• The American Memory Collection of the Library of Congress also has a wonderful collection of documents "the methods used by African and their American-born descendants to resist enslavement, as well as to demand emancipation and full participation in American society."
• A Visual History of the Atlantic Slave Trade & Slave Life(warning, this site does contain some pretty disturbing images)
• Point-Counterpoint debate on the Origins of Slavery and Racism in America (sort of a which came first discussion)
