9 Health and Physical Education (HPE)

Year 9 HPE Overview

Students must complete at least 1 semester of HPE or Healthy Lifestyle Choices. Students who did not select Healthy Lifestyle Choices as their compulsory option can also elect to take a second semester of Physical Education by choosing the Elective HPE or Outdoor Education courses. Students can also apply for the Sports Academy courses to enhance and deepen their understanding in a range of sports. Students who choose Healthy Lifestyle Choices as their compulsory HPE choice are not able to choose Sports Academy or Elective HPE as choice subjects. Students are limited to a total of 3 semester courses (4 for Sports Academy students) in Year 9.

Health and Physical Education / Length: 1 Semester (Compulsory Option)

Course Content

This is a compulsory course that is designed to  enthuse students with a joy for movement and enhance the development of lifelong physical activity habits. The students will continue to develop, refine and build upon the movements and concepts introduced in Year 8 in more complex situations. This will be done in a variety of physical activities. Students will also study a range of health topics such as self-esteem, relationships, diversity, gender and sexual health within the SHINE program.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices / Length: 1 Semester (Compulsory Option)

Course Content

This course is co-designed with students and offers flexible practical activities and assessments that differ from the HPE course. It encompasses both practical and theoretical aspects. The practical element has a greater emphasis on increasing participation and re-engaging students with the benefits of lifelong physical activity and the theoretical element focus being around "why we eat what we eat". The course also incorporates the SHINE program where students study a range of health topics such as self-esteem, relationships, diversity, gender and sexual health.

Elective PE / Length: 1 Semester (Elective)

This is an elective subject that enables students to participate in PE for a second semester. It is co-designed with students enabling them to experience a range of physical activities that would be different to the activities covered in their compulsory HPE lessons. There is also a theoretical component to the course to develop the students' understanding of the different body systems and the acute and chronic responses to exercise.

Outdoor Education / Length: 1 Semester (Elective)

Course Content

Outdoor Education offers students enjoyable challenges through outdoor activities and journeys. Students have the opportunity to experience a variety of practical activities, including aquatics, indoor rock climbing, orienteering and bushwalking. While developing a connection to the natural environment, students will also develop the knowledge and understanding that will allow them to engage in outdoor activities in a safe and sustainable way. Students will develop an understanding of team building and group dynamics, minimal impact techniques, basic first aid, equipment selection, nutrition, navigation and camp craft before applying these during a 3-day hiking and camping experience to Mount Crawford Forest.

Sports Academy / Length: 1 Semester (Elective)

Course Content

Sports Academy courses aim to improve the skill and knowledge base of students in the following specific sports: Netball and Volleyball in Semester 1 and  AFL, Basketball and Soccer in Semester 2. Although each individual sport has specific course content they all have particular themes. These are: the development of games specific skills, development and application of tactics and strategies, development of a sports-specific fitness program and the development of leadership and coaching skills.

Assessment

Individual courses have different assessment processes but all include practical, theoretical and collaboration elements to them.
