Year 10 Languages Overview
Year 10 elective languages are all full year courses, with scholarships available to participate in international travel opportunities to partnership schools*. The Beginners Language course is an intensive introduction for students who wish to begin their study of the language at senior secondary level. Prior experience and successful completion of Year 9 in the selected language is a requirement for the Continuers course.

French Beginners / Length: Full Year (Stage 1 SACE)
Course Content
This beginner’s course is an intensive and accelerated introduction to French and covers vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure. Students who enrol in this course will be undertaking Stage 1 Beginners French with the understanding that they continue to Stage 2 Beginners the following year. Please refer to Stage 1 Beginners French.
Assessment
Students are assessed in their ability to demonstrate understanding and communicate in the language through a range of written and spoken assessment tasks.
Additional Details
Students enrolling in Year 10 Beginners will be enrolled in Stage 1 Beginners’ course and cannot:
- have studied French in Years 8 and 9
- have spent more than three months living in a French-speaking country
- have a French-speaking family background
There may be associated costs throughout the semester for excursions and other learning opportunities.
A languages scholarship is available for international travel opportunities to partnership schools.

French Continuers / Length: Full Year
Course Content
Students continue to expand on their learning of vocabulary through a range of different mediums such as music lyrics, contemporary issues and film. They develop skills in interpreting cultural differences and learn to express opinion. There is an intensive grammar focus to enable students to recognise and express themselves in different tenses in spoken and written assessment tasks.

Students are assessed in their ability to demonstrate understanding and communicate in the language through a range of written and spoken assessment tasks.
Additional Details
This is a full year course. Students must have successfully completed Year 9 French.

German Continuers / Length: Full Year
Course Content
Year 10 German builds on the skills learned in Year 9, further developing students’ ability to effectively comprehend and communicate in language on topics such as food, teenage world, travel, technology, work, future plans and home life. At the end of this course, students will be able to express and understand complex views and their preferences, in past, present and future tenses in German.
Assessment
Students are assessed in their ability to demonstrate understanding and communicate in the language through a range of written and spoken assessment tasks.

This is a full year course. Students must have successfully completed Year 9 German.

Japanese Beginners / Length: Full Year (Stage 1 SACE)
Course Content
This beginner’s course is an intensive and accelerated introduction to Japanese and covers vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure. Students who enrol in this course will be undertaking Stage 1 Beginners Japanese with the understanding that they continue to Stage 2 Beginners the following year. Please refer to Stage 1 Beginners Japanese.

Students are assessed in their ability to demonstrate understanding and communicate in the language through a range of written and spoken assessment tasks.
