Year 8 Languages offers a one semester compulsory course, or one year specialist course within one of our languages: French, German and Japanese. A focus on understanding and communication across various topics forms this course, with students developing dispositions in intercultural understanding and global citizenship.
The Year 8 courses allow students to develop the basic language skills in one of our languages: French, German and Japanese. Students may cover topics such as greetings and questioning, time, the calendar, family, animals and culture as well as learning the written and grammatical features of each language while developing their knowledge of basic vocabulary and communicative skills.
Students are assessed through the specific Achievement Standards of the Australian Curriculum on both the receptive (listening and reading) and productive (writing and speaking) skills of their language and complete a variety of cultural learning tasks.
There may be associated costs throughout the semester for excursions and other learning opportunities.
No prior experience in the language is required.
The Year 8 Specialist Language course allows students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new language or continue in the study of the same language for one year. It is recommended for students who are interested in continuing language study beyond Year 8. Students may cover topics such as greetings and questioning, time, the calendar, family, animals, food, travel and culture as well as learning the written and grammatical features of each language.
