Year 11 Subject List

At Year 11, students should have planned a pathway to fulfill the 200 credit requirement to gain their SACE. More details are on the Home page of this website, but in summary:

The compulsory elements of the SACE require a passing grade of C- or higher, these subjects are:

Exploring Identities and Futures at Stage 1 worth 10 credits. In 2024 the EIF will replace the PLP
Learning Plan x 10 Credits Stage 1
Literacy (range of English/English as a Second Language subjects) x 20 Credits Stage 1 or 2
Numeracy (range of mathematics subjects) x 10 Credits Stage 1 or 2
Research Project x 10 Credits Stage 2
3 Stage 2 subjects x 60 Credits Stage 2

The remaining 90 credits required to gain the SACE will be chosen from a wide range of subjects and courses and can come from either Stage 1 or Stage 2.

Year 11 students study English, Mathematics and Research Project and may choose the equivalent of 8 semester subjects from the choice list below.

English (full year compulsory, worth 20 SACE Stage 1 credits): English, English as an Additional Language (EAL), English Literary Studies, Essential English

Mathematics (1 semester compulsory, worth 10 SACE Stage 1 credits per semester): General Mathematics A and B, Mathematical Methods A, B C and D (Specialist), Mathematics for Work and Life, Trade Mathematics

Research Project (1 semester compulsory, worth 10 SACE Stage 2 credits)

Science (full year subjects): Chemistry, Physics

(semester or full year subjects): Biology, Psychology

(semester subjects): Nutrition, Scientific Studies (Sustainability)

Global Studies (semester subjects): Accounting, Ancient Studies, Business Innovation, Driver Safety, Geography, Legal Studies, Modern History, Society and Culture, Tourism

Health and Physical Education (HPE) (semester subjects): Physical Education A and B, Sports Academy: Volleyball A and B, Sports Science (Scientific Studies), Health A and B, Outdoor Education A: Surfing and Orienteering , Outdoor Education B: Bushwalking and Snorkeling, First Aid

Arts (semester or full year subjects): Creative Arts: Film Making and Production Events, Creative Arts: Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Art, Visual Design

English / Length: Full Year

In Stage 1 English, students select from a range of specifically designed courses in order to successfully achieve the SACE and prepare them for their appropriate pathway in Stage 2 of the SACE. Students are required to successfully complete 20 credits (2 semesters) of English to meet the compulsory literacy requirement of the SACE. Students must achieve a result of C or better for both semesters in one of the English options below. They study one of the courses below for the full year:

English

Course Content

Stage 1 English has an emphasis on responding to texts, creating texts and intertextual study. Students critically and creatively engage with a variety of types of texts including novels, film, media, poetry, and drama texts. Stage 1 English can lead to many of the Stage 2 English subjects.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Course Content

English as an Additional Language is designed for students for whom English is a second language or an additional language or dialect. These students have had different experiences in English and one or more other languages. Students who study this subject come from diverse personal, educational and cultural backgrounds.

English Literary Studies

Course Content

This course is designed to develop critical thinking skills for the interpretation of texts. Students are expected to have strong analytical skills, read widely and write accurately through the study of novels, poetry, plays and films that challenge them. Students who select this course will have achieved highly in English in previous years.

A high level of achievement in any Year 10 English course is recommended.

Essential English

Course Content

This course is designed for a range of students, including those who are seeking to meet the SACE literacy requirement, students planning to pursue a career in a range of trades or vocational pathways. Students engage in a range of language learning activities that aim to enhance their language and literacy skills in order for them to engage successfully in the work and community life.

Selection of this subject means you do not intend to study English at Year 12.

Mathematics / Length: Semester

In Year 11 Mathematics, students must study a minimum of 1 semester subject, worth 10 Stage 1 SACE credits. They may select one or more of the subjects below:

General Mathematics A

Course Content

The Semester 1 course is designed for students seeking a general mathematics course suitable for most jobs. It aims to develop investigative, application and problem solving skills. These skills are acquired by the application of maths to the solution of everyday problems.

Topic 1: Investing and borrowing
Topic 2: Measurement
Topic 3: Statistical investigation

Successful completion of Year 10 General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods is a prerequisite.

General Mathematics B

Course Content

The Semester 2 course is designed for students seeking a general mathematics course suitable for most jobs. It aims to develop investigative, application and problem solving skills. These skills are acquired by the application of maths to the solution of everyday problems.

Topic 1: Applications of trigonometry
Topic 2: Matrices
Topic 3: Linear and exponential functions

Successful completion of Year 11 General Mathematics A is a prerequisite.

Mathematical Methods A, B, C & D (Specialist)

Course Content

Four semester courses. This is a demanding academic course with a theoretical base, together with significant investigative and project work. Its content is to provide a background for further academic study, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics at Stage 2. Mathematical Methods A and C are required for Mathematical Methods at Year 12. Mathematical Methods B is also recommended. In addition, Mathematics D is required for Specialist Mathematics at Year 12. Mathematics A and B topics include algebra, the study of functions, calculus, probability and statistics. Mathematics C and D topics include understanding of concepts and techniques drawn from combinatorics, geometry, trigonometry, complex numbers, vectors, matrices, calculus and statistics.

Year 10 Mathematical Methods with a minimum B grade or by teacher recommendation is a prerequisite.

Mathematics for Work and Life

Course Content

This topic enables students to build on their knowledge and understanding of mathematical information and its relationship to everyday contexts. This subject is intended primarily for those students who, through their Personal Learning Plans, have identified numeracy skills as an area for development. This course does not prepare students for any Mathematics in Year 12.

Trade Mathematics / Full Year

Course Content

The course is designed for students who are doing VET-type courses and seeking a Mathematics course that will give experience and practice for the mathematical skills required in the trades. It aims to develop numerical, investigative, application and problem solving skills as related to the trades. This course does not prepare students for any Mathematics in Year 12.

Students select a topic of personal interest, develop a question and then answer that question using a variety of research processes.

This is a compulsory Stage 2 subject in which students must achieve a C- or above to achieve their SACE.
