Year 12 HPE Overview
Students may select from the following full year Health & Physical Education subjects:
Health / Length: Full Year
Course Content
Students develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to explore and understand influences and make decisions regarding health and wellbeing. Students will explore and learn about the following areas:
The topic of drugs and alcohol use considering the risk factors for adolescents and assessing the needs of the target group.
The concept of health promotion as a process of enabling people to increase their control over and methods to improve their health.
Mental health and mental illness and the contributing factors that influence social stereotypes surrounding this topic within the community and the social justice issues reflected by this.
Contemporary sexual health issues and debatable pros and cons within this area considering a range of social justice issues.
Assessment
Initiative 1: adolescent health and wellbeing exhibition; group task (20%).
Initiative 2: personal health goal (20%).
Folio 1: mental health in the media (15%).
Folio 2: contemporary sexual health issue (15%)
Externally assessed external inquiry: independently research a health and wellbeing issue (30%).
Additional Details
It is preferable that students complete and pass the Stage 1 Health course with at least a C grade and ideally undertake the Year 10 course, as this gives a base of information for the Stage 1 and 2 courses.

Outdoor Education / Length: Full Year
Course Content
Outdoor Education offers a practical approach to learning, providing students enjoyable challenges through outdoor activities and journeys. Students have the opportunity to experience two outdoor activities: bushwalking and aquatics. While developing an appreciation for and connecting to the natural environment, students will develop the knowledge and understanding that will allow them to plan and engage in outdoor activities in a safe and sustainable way. Students will develop a theoretical understanding of conservation and sustainability, human connections with nature and personal and social growth and development. To complete the course students have the opportunity to plan, lead, and facilitate a self-reliant journey with their peers. Students will apply their theoretical understanding to 3 outdoor activities:
3-day surfing practical
4-day bushwalk or canoe based camp
3-day self-reliant journey in a location of students' choice
Assessment
Assessment is flexible and differentiated to student needs within 3 key areas:
Assessment Type 1: about natural environments (20%)
Assessment Type 2: experiences in natural environments (50%)
Assessment Type 3: connections with natural environments (30%)
Additional Details
There are no specific requirements for Year 12 Outdoor Education but completion of either Year 11 Outdoor Education A or B or both is desirable.
A reasonable level of fitness, willingness to be outdoors and commitment to undertake a series of practical lessons throughout the year along with 2 tent-based camps is essential.
Although learning occurs through practical activities, NO assessments are practically based.
The cost to complete Year 12 Outdoor Education is $600. Students will be required to complete a commitment to pay on subject selection day.

Physical Education / Length: Full Year
Course Content
Students comprehensively explore the participation and performance of physical activities. It is an experiential subject in which students explore their physical capacities and investigate the factors that influence and improve participation and performance outcomes across a range of sports and activities. Key areas of study can include:
Exercise physiology
Factors affecting performance
Skill acquisition
Group dynamics and game modification
Biomechanical analysis
Fitness programming
Assessment
Diagnostics x 2 (30%).
Improvement analysis (40%).
Externally assessed group dynamics (40%).
Additional Details
It is preferable that students have completed Stage 1 Physical Education A and B with at least a C grade.
It is important students actively participate in both practical and theoretical aspects of the course and they have a passion for physical activity.

Sports Academy: Volleyball / Length: Full Year
Course Content
This course will not only enhance students' practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding in volleyball but will also support a pathway into sport and recreation, sports science and coaching. They will also actively engage with the school and wider community to enhance their own and others' performance. Key areas of study include:
Skills, concepts and strategies of indoor and beach volleyball
Effective coaching
Tournament organisation
Sports psychology
Assessment
Practical inquiries (40%).
Connections task (30%).
Personal endeavour (30%).
Additional Details
Students are required to have undertaken Sports Academy: Volleyball in previous years or have solid volleyball skills and knowledge. Participating in Stage 1 Sports Academy: Volleyball A and B will be an advantage.
There may be a cost for interschool competitions.

Sports Science (Scientific Studies) / Length: Full Year
Course Content
Sport Science provides a powerful platform for students to develop their capabilities; in particular to think creatively, work collaboratively and be innovative. The course is based around the development of science inquiry skills, including making observations, questioning and thinking, designing, collaborating, conducting investigations, understanding data, evaluating and drawing conclusions. Work is based on the various branches of Sports Science including topics such as exercise physiology, sports nutrition and biomechanics. It is important for students to have good communication and analytical skills as these are key skills in the journaling, report writing and personal investigation aspects of the course assessments.
Assessment
Inquiry folio: practical reports, research and essays (50%).
Collaborative inquiry: group practical work (20%).
Externally assessed individual investigation: individual long term inquiry project (30%).

It is preferable that students have completed Stage 1 Sports Science, Physical Education A or B with at least a C grade.
